STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Crochet Vestee – Pattern
Star Stitch and Single crochet.
Row 1 (right side): Draw up a lp in 2nd and each of the next 4 ch (6 lps on hook), yo and draw through all 6 lps, ch 1 (this is referred to as “eye”), * draw up a lp in eye, another lp through back of last lp of Star st just made, draw up another lp through same ch as last lp of Star st, draw up a lp through each of the next 2 ch (6 lps on hook), yo and draw through all 6 lps, ch 1; repeat from * to end. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 2: 1 sc in 1st “eye,” then 2 sc in each “eye” across row, ending with 1 sc in last Star st. Ch 2, turn.
Row 3: Draw up a lp in front thread of 2nd ch from hook, draw up a lp in back thread of same ch, draw up a lp in each of the next 3 sts then working through both threads of st, yo and draw through all 6 lps, ch 1 * draw up a lp in eye, a 3p in hack lp of last st, then a lp in each of the next 2 sts, yo and draw through all 6 lps, ch 1; repeat from * ending with a Star st, drawing up last lp of Star st in top of turning ch. Ch 1, turn. Repeat rows 2 and 3 for pat.
Back of Crochet Vestee
Make a ch loosely to measure 13 (14, 15, 16)” or 1″ longer than desired width across back waist. Work Row 1 of pat. across ch until row measures 12 (12 1/2, 13 1/4, 14)” or desired waist measurement. Work in pat, inc. (2 sc in same st) 1 st each end of sc row every 1″ until row measures 14 (15, 16, 17)” or desired width across back at underarm.
Work even until back measures 6 (6 1/2, 7, 7)” from start or desired length to underarm, ending with Row 2.
Armholes for Crochet Vestee
At beg of next row sl st across 1 (1, 1 1/4, 1 1/4)”, work in pat. to within same number of sts of end of row. Ch 1, turn. On next sc row, dec. 1 st each end. Repeat this dec. every sc row until row measures desired width across back (above armholes). Work even until armholes measure 6 1/2 (7, 7 1/2, 7 3/4)” above armhole. Fasten off.
Left Front of Crocheted Vest
Make a ch loosely to measure 10 (11, 12, 13)”.
Work in pat. across ch until row measures 8 (9, 10, 11)” or 2″ longer than desired width across half of waist measurement (the extra 2″ is allowed for double-breast effect).
Keeping front edge even, shape underarm edge same as for back until row measures 10 (11, 12, 13)” or 2″ more than desired width across half of bust. Work even until front is same as back to underarm.
Armhole for Crochet Vestee
At arm edge, sl st and dec. same as for back. At Same Time, when armhole measures 1 (1, 1 1/2, 1 1/2)”, ending at armhole edge.
How to Shape the Neck
Work across until row is desired shoulder measurement.
Ch 1, turn. Work back and forth on these sts, until armhole measures same as back. Break off.
Right Front of Crochet Vest
Work to correspond with Left Front, reversing shaping and working 3 sets of buttonholes, starting 1st set on 1st sc row and last set in last sc row.
Making the Buttonholes
Place pins in front edge of Left Front as a guide in making buttonholes. Work buttonhole as follows: Starting at center front edge, * work 2 sc, ch 2, skip 2 sts *, work across for 1″, and repeat from * to * once more, then work to end of row. On next row, work Star st under ch-2 space (2 buttonholes in row).
The Final Finishing Touches
Seam shoulders and underarms. On right side, work 1 row of sc around entire center front and neck edge and 1 row around each armhole. With CC and tapestry yarn, embroider flowers around neck edge as shown in illustration. Sew on buttons.
