‘Bobby’ Cardigan Pattern – Free Sweater Pattern for a Child

This free crochet ‘Bobby’ cardigan (size 1 year) was originally published around 1942 in “Lovely Creations for Baby“, No. S16.

How to Crochet a Sweater/Cardigan

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Sultana Beautysheen (All Rayon)
6 balls Blue (A), 3 balls Pink (B)
Steel Crochet Hook, Sise 5

NOTE(s)

This cardigan is for a 1 year old child.

Gauge: 8 patterns = 3 inches
11 rows (6 ch and 5 cluster) – 2 inches

Measurements – Chest 21 inches. Length from lower edge to back of neck 11 inches. Sleeves – Width 7 1/2 inches.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

With B, ch 170 for lower edge of back and fronts, drop B (always draw up a long loop when dropping color to prevent ripping). Pattern is a multiple of 3 plus 2 on foundation ch.

First Row – With A, draw a loop through last loop of ch, ch 2, 1 d c in 2nd st from end of foundation ch, * ch 3, 1 s c in same st, ch 3, 1 d c in same st, skip 2 sts of foundation ch, 1 d c in next st; repeat from * to end (56 clusters). Drop A. Do not turn.

2nd Row – Take up B from other end of row, draw through top st of turning ch (turning ch counts as 1 d c), ch 5, 1 s c in space between first and 2nd cluster, * ch 3, 1 s c between next 2 clusters; repeat from *, end ch 3, 1 s c between last cluster and d c, draw A through last loop.

3rd Row – With A, ch 3, turn, * into center st of 3 ch on row below, work 1 d c, ch 3, 1 s c, ch 3, 1 d c; repeat from * across row, end 1 d c in first st of turning ch of row below.

Repeat 2nd and 3rd row for pattern. Work 7 inches even (40 rows) or desired length to underarm, end with a ch row.

Front

Work 13 clusters for front, 1 d c in next s c, drop A. Work ch patterns to end of 13 patterns. Continue on these 13 patterns until 2 3/4 inches (14 rows) above underarm, end at armhole edge with ch row. Work clusters to within 5 ch patterns of front edge, end 1 d c in next s c. Work even on 8 patterns until 4 inches (22 rows) above underarm. Fasten off.

Back

Skip 2 patterns on last long row for underarm; join A in next s c, ch 3, work across next 26 patterns, end 1 d c in next s c.

Continue pattern until there are 20 rows above underarm, end with ch row.

Next row, work 8 clusters, 1 d c in next s c. Fasten off.

Skip 10 ch patterns, join A in next s c, ch 3, work 8 clusters, end 1 d c. Fasten off.

Second Front

Skip 2 patterns on last long row for 2nd underarm; join A in next s c, ch 3, work pattern on 13 patterns. Finish to correspond to first front.

Sleeve

With B, ch 62. Join A, work pattern (20 clusters) for 7 1/2 inches, end with ch row. Fasten off.

Finishing

Sew shoulder seams, using B, holding in each of the 8 clusters on the back, to the 8 ch patterns on each front. Sew sleeve seams to within 2 rows of top. Sew in sleeves with sleeve seam at center underarm; sewing last 2 rows on each side of sleeve to patterns left off for underarm.7

Edging

With B, beg. at lower right front cornel1, work * 2 s c in space, 1 s c on end of A row *, repeat between *’s to corner (81 s c); 3 s c in corner; 2 s c in each space across front of neck; repeat between *’s to back of neck; ^ 2 s c in space, 1 s c in s c; repeat from ^ across back of neck; work other side to correspond; 3 s c in lower left front corner; 2 s c in space, 1 s c in cluster across lower edge; 3 s c in corner, join with a slip st. Drop B.

With A, work 1 s c in slip st just made, 1 s c in next st, * ch 3, skip 3 sts, 1 s c in each of next 12 sts; repeat from * 4 times, end ch 3, skip 3, 3 s c at neck edge, continue around entire cardigan; join with a slip st. Take up B, work 1 s c in each st of last row. Fasten off. Beg. at seam, with B, work 48 s c on lower edge of sleeve. Work 1 row each A, B, A, B. Fasten off. Steam.
