How to Crochet a Potholder
REQUIRED MATERIALS
Art. 600 Lily Cotton Yarn Skeins or
Art. 930 Sugar ‘N Cream Yarn Balls
1/2-Skein or Ball Each; Orange and Dk. Brown
Crochet Hook No. 0
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Starting in center with Orange, ch 5, join with sl st to form ring.
Row 1 – Ch 1, 8 sc in ring, join with sl st in 1st sc, draw out lp, pass ball thru and pull tight.
Row 2 – Turn, sc in Brown in back lp of 1 sc, * holding back the last lp of each dc on hook, make 2 dc in same sc, yarn over and draw thru all lps on hook (a Cluster-puff st made), sc in back lp of next sc.
Repeat from * around (8 puffs), letting Orange hang down on side towards you – out of way. Draw sc down tight between puff sts so the puff sts puff out on back – right side of work. Join with sl st in 1st sc, pull out lp, pass ball thru and pull tight.
Row 3 – Turn, pull up Orange Insert hook in one st, catch Orange and draw thru, ch 1, 2 sc in both lps of each st around (32 sc), letting Brown hang down at back. Join with sl st in 1st sc, draw out lp, pass ball thru and pull tight.
Row 4 – Turn, draw up Brown and thru both lps of one sc, ch 1. (a 2-dc Cluster-puff st in back lp of next sc, sc in both lps of next sc) repeated around (16 puffs), letting Orange hang down on side towards you. Join Brown and fasten as before.
Row 5 – Turn, join Orange, sc in one puff st, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next puff st) repeated around (48 sc).
Row 6 – Repeat Row 4 (24 puffs).
Row 7 – Turn, join Orange, ch 1, (sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeated around (60 sc). Join and fasten as before.
Row 8 – Repeat Row 4 (30 puffs).
Row 9 – Turn, join Orange, ch 1, sc in each st around. Join and fasten as before.
Row 10 – Repeat Row 4 – (30 puffs). Fasten off Brown.
Row 11 – Petals – With wrong-side-up, join Orange to sc between any 2 puffs, ch 7, sk 1 ch, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, a 2-dc cluster in next ch, sk next puff st, sl st in next sc, * ch 1, turn and working in back lps only, sk sl st, sc in next 4 dc. Ch 3, turn, sk 1 ch, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in back lps of next 3 sc, a 2-dc Cluster in next sc, sk puff st, sl st in next sc. Repeat from * around (30 petals). End with sc-row and sew to 1st row.
Cover Orange center (Row 1) with Brown French Knots, cover a bone ring with sc in Orange. Sew to one petal. Steam and press holder dry on back thru a cloth. Line back with cloth.
