‘Chicks’ Potholders Pattern- Free Crochet Potholder Pattern

This free ‘chicks’ potholders pattern was originally published in the 1940s in the Bucilla’s Crochet Creations for Home Decorations.

Crochet Potholder - Chic Chicks

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Bucilla Wonder-Knit, Article 3777:
1 skein Main Color (A); 1 skein Contrasting Color (B)
Steel Crochet Hook, Size 0

NOTE(s)

Gauge: 5 sc = 1 inch 5 rows = 1 inch

(A) Even: – Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st across.

(B) To dec. 1 st: – draw up a loop in each of 2 sts, yo, draw thru all 3 loops on hook.

This set consists of 2 potholders.

Body (Make 2)

With A make a loop on hook, ch 6.

Row 1 (right side) – 2 sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in last st; (7 sc in row).

Row 2 – Ch 2, turn, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each remaining st, 1 more sc in last st; (10 sc in row).

Rpt row 2, 6 times; (28 sc in last row).

Rows 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 – Even (see Note A).

Row 15 (Head) – Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each of first 11 sts (leaving 17 sts free).

Row 16 – Ch 1, turn, dec. 1 st (see Note B), 1 sc in each remaining st; (10 sc in row).

Row 17 – Even.

Rpt row 16; (9 sc in row).

Row 19 – Even.

Row 20 – Ch 1, turn, dec. 1 st, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, dec. 1 st; (7 sc in row).

Rpt row 16; (6 sc in row).

Rpt row 20; (4 sc in row), fasten off.

Tail

From right side, skip first 6 free sts on row 14, with A 1 sc in each of last 12 sts.

Rpt row 20 twice; (8 sc in last row).

Next Row – Ch 4, turn, 1 dc in each of first 2 sts, 1 hdc in next st, 1 sc in each of 3 sts, dec. 1 st, fasten off.

Edging

From right side, with B, starting at center st of row 1, work 1 rnd of sc around, keeping edge flat, join with slip st in first sc.

Feet

Row 1 – Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each of first 3 sts.

Row 2 – Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first st, 1 se in next st, 2 sc in last st.

Row 3 – Even.

Row 4 – Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first st, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in last st, fasten off.

Sew 2 halves of Body together from end of 12th row, around Head, Body and Tail to last row of Tail, leaving lower part open.

Comb

From right side, working thru both thicknesses, with B 1 sc at beginning of row 13, working around Head, [1 hdc and 1 dc] all in next st, 2 tr (yo twice) in next st, [1 dc and 1 hdc] all in next st, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st, [1 dc and 1 tr] all in next st, ch 4, slip st in each of next 2 sts, * ch 3, 2 tr in each of next 2 sts, ch 3, slip st in next st; rpt from * 3 times, fasten off.

Wing (Make 2)

With B ch 5, 1 sc in 2nd st from hook and each remaining st; (4 sc in row).

Row 2 – Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first st, 1 sc in each remaining st, 1 more sc in last st; (6 sc in row).

Rpt row 2, 4 times; (14 sc in last row).

Work 2 even rows.

Row 9 – Rpt row 16; (13 sc in row).

Row 10 – Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, dec. 1 st; (12 sc in row).

Rpt last 2 rows twice; (8 sc in last row).

Rpt row 20, 3 times; (2 sc in last row).

Work off last 2 sc as 1, fasten off. Sew Wings in place; split 1/2 yard of B in half, embroider Eye on each side as in illustration.

Make 1 more Chicken.
