Crocheting the Sweater
RIBBING: With Buttercup ch 12, s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each remaining st of ch, ch 1, turn.
2nd Row. Working in back loop of sts for entire ribbing work 1 s c in each s c, ch 1, turn.
Repeat 2nd row until there are 162 rows (81 ribs).
Working across long side work 162 s c across ribbing (right side), ch 3, turn.

BACK (Right side): D c in 1st s c, 1 sl st in each of the next 3 d c of 1st shell (underarm), s c in ch 1 of next shell, ch 1, shell in same space, work 17 more shells across back ending with s c in ch 1 of next shell, ch 3, turn. Continue working back and forth in shell pattern until there are 14 rows from underarm, ch 3, turn.
Next Row. * Skip 1st d c of shell, 1 s c in each of the next 4 d c of same shell, repeat from * across row (72 s c), ch 1, turn.
LEFT SHOULDER: 1 s c in each of the next 20 s c, ch 1, turn.
Next Row. 1 s c in each s c, cut yarn.
RIGHT SHOULDER: Attach yarn at opposite side and work 1 s c in each of the next 20 s c, ch 1, turn.
Next Row. 1 s c in each of the 20 s c, ch 1, turn.
Next Row. 1 s c in each of the 20 s c of shoulder, 2 s c in corner, 1 s c in each s c across back of neck, 2 s c in corner of other shoulder, 1 s c in each s c across shoulder, cut yarn.
Attach Blue and work 1 sl st in each s c, cut yarn.
FRONT: Attach yarn in 1st st from left armhole edge and work 8 sl sts over 1st 2 shells (left underarm), s c in ch 1 or 3rd shell, ch 1, shell in same space, s c in next s c, d c in next d c, continue in pattern across front same as previous rows working 1 shell after the 3rd openwork panel, ending with s c in ch 1 of next shell, ch 3, turn.
2nd Row. On wrong side work 4 d c in same space, s c in ch 1 of next shell, ch 1, shell in same space (2 shells), work across front in pattern same as before, ending with 2 shells at end or row, ch 3, turn.
3rd Row. S c in ch 1 of 1st shell, ch 1, shell in same space, s c in ch 1 of next shell, d c in next d c, then work in pattern across front always working the openwork pattern on the openwork pattern of previous row ending with s c in ch 1 of next shell, shell in same space, s c in ch 1 of next shell, ch 3, turn.
Repeat the last 2 rows until there are 14 rows from underarm ending on wrong side at left armhole, ch 3, turn.
Next Row. (Shoulder) – s c in ch 1 of 1st shell, ch 1, shell in same space, s c in ch 1 of next shell, d c in next d c, openwork pattern over 1st openwork pattern, s c in ch 1 of next shell, ch 1, shell in same space, s c in ch 1 of next shell, ch 3, turn. Work 3 more rows in pattern ending at left armhole edge, ch 1, turn.
Next Row. Work 7 s c over 2 shells, 6 s c over openwork pattern, 7 s c over last 2 shells (20 s c), ch 1. turn.
Next Row. 1 s c in each of the 1st 2 s c, ch 2, skip 2 s c (buttonhole), 1 s c in each of the next 6 s c, ch 2, skip 2 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 8 s c, cut yarn.
RIGHT SHOULDER: Attach yarn in 3rd shell to left of center openwork panel and keeping pattern even work shoulder to correspond, cut yarn.
Attach yarn in 1st st of left shoulder and work 1 s c in each s c and 1 s c in each st of ch, 2 s c in corner of shoulder, 7 s c on side of neck, 2 s c at center neck, 4 s c over each of the next 2 shells, 1 s c in each st of openwork panel, finish opposite side to correspond, cut yarn.
Attach Blue and work 1 sl st in each s c, cut yarn.
SLEEVES (Cuff): With Buttercup ch 10, and work ribbing same as on sweater until there are 36 rows (18 ribs). Working across long side work 55 s c, ch 3, turn.
2nd Row. 1 d c in same space, * skip 3 s c, s c in next s c, ch 1, shell in same space, repeat from * 4 times, s c in next s c, d c in next s c, ch 2, skip 2 s c, 1 d c in each of the next 3 d c, ch 2, skip 2 s c, d c in next s c, s c in next s c, ch 1, shell in same space, * skip 3 s c, s c in next s c, ch 1, shell in same space, repeat from * 4 times, s c in last s c, ch 3. turn.
Work in pattern same as sweater until there are 27 rows of shells, ch 1, turn.
Next Row. Work 55 s c across row, cut yarn. Sew side seam. Sew shoulder seam 1/4 inch in from shoulder edge. Sew sleeve seams and sew sleeves in position. Sew buttons in position.
TIE: With 2 strands of Blue crochet a ch 7 inches long. Tie in left side of sweater as illustrated. Finish with a small pompon at each end.
POMPONS: Wind Blue around a 3/4 inch cardboard 150 times. Tie securely at each end of cardboard. Cut yarn at center and trim into shape.
EMBROIDERY: With Blue work a running st diagonally through 2 rows of d c then in opposite direc tion through next 2 rows. Repeat down center of each openwork panel. With Bain Pink “STAR” SIX STRAND EMBROIDERY COTTON work a flower in each point using 1 Lazy Daisy st for each flower. Place a Pink st in center of each flower. With Nile Green work a 1/4 inch outline st on each side of flower.
Crocheting the Cap
FRONT EDGE (Ribbing): With Buttercup ch 12 and work ribbing same as on sweater until there are 102 rows (51 ribs). Work 102 s c across long side (right side), ch 3, turn. Work in pattern same as sweater front.
2nd Row. A d c in same space, * skip 3 s c, s c in next s c, ch 1, shell in same space, repeat from * 1 times, ** skip l s c, s c in next s c, d c in next s c, ch 2, skip 2 s c, 1 d c in each of the next 3 s c, ch 2, skip 2 s c, d c in next s c, s c in next s c, ch 1, shell in same space, * skip 3 s c, s c in next s c, ch 1, shell in same space, repeat from * twice, repeat from ** twice, * skip 3 s c, s c in next s c, ch 1, shell in same space, repeat from * once, s c in end ch (3 open pattern stripes with 1 shells between pattern stripes and 6 shells on each end), ch 3, turn.
In next row there will be 6 shells at beginning of row, open pattern stripe, 3 shells, open pattern stripe, 3 shells, open pattern stripe, 5 shells, ending with s c in ch 3, ch 3. turn. Repeat the last 2 rows until there are 15 rows of shells, ch 1, turn, then work 102 s c across row, cut yarn.
CROWN: With Buttercup ch 2, 6 s c in 1st st of ch, do not join rounds, place a marker at beginning of each round.
2nd Round. 2 s c in each s c (12 s c).
3rd Round. * 1 s c in each of the next 2 s c, 1 d c in same st of previous round, repeat from * all around (6 d c in round).
4th Round. * 1 s c in each of the next 3 sts, 1 d c around the post of same d c, picking up entire post and inserting hook sideways from right to left, repeat from * all around. Continue increasing 1 st in each gore (6 gores) until there are 20 rows. This will measure about 4 1/2 inches. Pin crown to cap leaving 1 gore free at back of neck. With Buttercup crochet the 2 sections together with a row of s c, cut yarn. Attach Blue and work 1 sl st in each s c, cut yarn.
Starting at left side of neck work 70 s c across lower edge working st for st over ribbing and 19 s c on sides and 10 s c on back, ch 1, turn.
Next 6 Rows. 1 s c in each s c, ch 1 to turn all rows, cut yarn.
TIE: With single strand of Blue, crochet a ch 5 inches long, tie in left side of center front and finish ends with pompons.
POMPONS FOR FRONT OF CAP: Wind Blue 75 times over 1/2 inch cardboard and finish same as for sweater pompon.
POMPONS FOR SIDE OF CAP: Wind Blue over a 1 inch cardboard 150 times, finish in same manner. Sew to cap as illustrated. Sew ribbon in place on each side under the pompons. Embroider same as sweater.
Crocheting the Booties
UPPER SECTION: Starting at top with Buttercup ch 14 and work ribbing same as for sweater until there are 50 rows (25 ribs). Work 49 s c across long sitle of ribbing, ch 4, turn.
2nd Row. D c in 2nd s c, * ch 1 (for beading), skip 1 s c, d c in next s c, repeat from * across row, ch 1, join in 3rd st of ch 4, ch 1, turn.
3rd Row. Work 49 s c across row, drop yarn.
INSTEP: On right side attach a length of Buttercup in the 20th s c from center back, ch 3, d c in next s c, ch 2, skip 2 s c, 1 d c in each of the next 3 s c, ch 2, skip 2 s c, 1 d c in each of the next 2 s c, ch 3, turn.
Next Row. D c in next d c, ch 2, 1 d c in each of the next 3 d c, ch 2, 1 d c in next d c, d c in 3rd st of ch, ch 3, turn.
Repeat the last row 3 times, do not ch 3 at end of last row, cut yarn.
Pick up dropped yarn at center back and work 1 s c in each s c, work in s c around entire instep working 2 s c in each corner at toe, 1 s c in each s c to back, ch 3, turn.
Next Row. 4 d c in same space, then work 17 more shells same as sweater spacing shells evenly ending with s c in last st, ch 3, turn.
Work 3 more rows of shell pattern, ch 1 to turn last row.
Next Row. 1 s c in each shell, cut yarn leaving an end. Thread into needle and sew back seam. Work embroidery design oyer instep same as sweater.
SOLE: Ch 20 (about 2 3/4 inches), 4 s d c in 3rd st from hook (s d c: yarn over hook, insert in st, pull loop through, yarn over anil pull through all loops at one lime), 1 s d c in each of next 16 sts of ch, 4 s d c in end ch, working on other side of ch, work 1 s d c in each of next 10 sts, join in 1st s d c.
2nd Round. Ch 2, s d c in same space, 2 s d c in each of next 3 sts, 1 s d c in each of next 15 sts, 2 s d c in eath of next 5 sts, 1 s d c in each of next 15 sts, 2 s d c in last st, join.
3rd Round. Ch 2, s d c in same space, 2 s d c in each of next 4 sts, 1 s d c in each of next 18 sts, 2 s d c in each of next 7 sts, 1 s d c in eath of next 18 sts, 2 s d c in last st, join.
4th Round. Ch 2, work 1 s d c in each st increasing 4 sts evenly spaced around toe and 3 sts around heel, join.
5th Round. Ch 2, 1 s d c in each st increasing 4 sts evenly spaced (72 sts), join, cut yarn.
Pin in position to upper section. With Buttercup crochet the 2 sections together with s c, cut yarn. With Blue work 1 sl st in each s c, cut yarn. With single strand of Blue crochet a ch about 12 inches long. Lace through beading and finish with small pompons same as pompons on center of cap.
