‘Barbara’ Baby Set – Free Crochet Pattern Set for an Infant

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Sultana Beautysheen (All Rayon), 11 balls (Sacque 7 balls; Bonnet 2 1/2 balls; Booties 1 1/2 balls). Steel Crochet Hook, Sise 6.

NOTE(s)

This crochet baby set is for size infant to 6 months.

These instructions apply only when Sultana Beautysheen is used as recommended.

5 patterns of 5 d c, ch 4 = 4 inches
6 rows = l inch

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Crocheting the Sacque

Measuements – Width at underarm 20 inches. Length from lower edge to back of neck 10 inches. Sleeve – Width 6 1/2 inches.

Yoke

Ch 107 for neck edge. Work 1 d c in 4th st from hook, 1 d c in each of next 3 sts, * 2 d c in next st, 1 d c in each of next 4 sts; repeat from * to end (125 d c, counting turning ch as 1 d c).

First row (wrong side)- Ch 3, turn, 1 d c in first d c (same st as turning ch), 1 s c in next st, * ch 1, skip 1, 2 d c in next st (a shell), 1 s c in next st; repeat from *, end 1 s c in turning ch (42 shell stripes).

2nd row – Ch 3, turn, 1 d c in first s c, 1 s c in last d c of first shell, * ch 1, 1 shell of 2 d c in next s c, 1 s c in last d c of shell; repeat from *, end last s c in top of turning ch.

Repeat 2nd row once.

4th row – Same as 2nd row, working 3 d c instead of 2 d c in each shell.

Repeat 4th row twice.

7th row – Same as 4th row, working ch 2 between each shell.

Repeat 7th row twice.

10th row – Same as 7th row, working 4 d c in each shell.

Repeat 10th row 3 times.

14th row – Same as 10th row, working ch 5 between each shell.

Repeat 14th row 3 times.

18th row – Same as 14th row, working 5 d c in each shell.

Repeat 18th row 3 times.

22nd row – Same as 18th row, working ch 4, between each shell. This completes increases in pattern.

Repeat last row 3 times, end on wrong side. Yoke should now measure about 4 1/2 inches.

Divide for sleeves. Work pattern over 7 shell stripes for left front, end 1 s c in last d c of 7th shell; skip next 8 shell stripes for left sleeve, 1 s c in last d c of 8th shell, ch 4, a shell in next s c, work 11 more shell stripes (12 shell stripes for back), end 1 s c in last d c of 12th shell, skip next 8 shell stripes for right sleeve, 1 s c in last d c of 8th shell, ch 4, a shell in next s c, work pattern to end. Work even on 26 shell stripes until 5 1/2 inches from underarm. Fasten off.

Sleeves

Working from right side, skip ch 4, work a shell in first s c on left sleeve, work 7 more shell stripes, end 1 s c in last d c of 8th shell. Ch 3, turn. Work even on 8 shell stripes until sleeve measure 5 inches from underarm. Fasten off. Work right sleeve to correspond.

Finishing

Sew sleeve seams. Beg. at neck edge on left front, work 1 row s c to lower edge. Fasten off. Beg. at lower edge, work 1 row s c on right front edge to neck, ch 1, turn, 1 s c in first st, * ch 3, skip 2, 1 s c in each of next 4 sts; repeat from * 4 times, 1 slip st in next st. Fasten off. Steam lightly. Sew on buttons.

Crocheting the Bonnet

Ch 5, join with a slip st in a ring. Ch 3, work 15 d c in ring; join with a slip st to top of ch 3.

2nd round – Ch 3, 1 d c in same st as ch 3, 2 d c in each st to end of round; join with a slip st (32 d c, counting ch 3).

3rd round – Ch 3, * 1 d c in next st, 2 d c in next st, repeat from * around; join with a slip st (48 d c).

4th round – Ch 3, 1 d c in same st as ch 3, * 1 d c in each of 2 sts, 2 d c in next st; repeat from * 12 times, work 2 d c in every 2nd st 3 times, work 1 d c in each of last 2 d c; join (65 d c).

First row (wrong side) – Ch 3, turn, 1 d c in same st as turning ch, 1 s c in next st, * ch 1, skip 1, 2 d c in next st, 1 s c in next st; repeat from * to end (22 shell stripes). Do not join.

2nd row – Same as 2nd row of yoke on sacque.

3rd and 4th row – Same as 4th row of yoke.

5th and 6th row – Same as 7th row of yoke.

7th and 8th row – Same as 10th row of yoke.

9th row – Same as 14th row of yoke.

10th row – Same as 9th row of bonnet, working to within 5 patterns of end with 1 s c in last d c of shell (17 shell stripes).

Work 2 rows even as on 9th row of bonnet.

13th row – Same as 18th row of yoke. Repeat last row until 6 inches from center of bonnet, end on right side.

Next row – Same as 22nd row of yoke.

Repeat last row 6 times. Fasten off.

Finishing

Steam lightly. Sew seam on side. Turn back the last 7 rows for turn-back. Working through turn-back and bonnet, from right side, work 1 row s c on neck edge, holding in to 8 inches. Ch 1, turn, 1 s c in each st. Ch 3, turn, 1 d c in each st.

Repeat last row once.

Work 1 more row s c. Fasten off.

Trim as shown in illustration.

Crocheting the Booties

Instep

Ch 10, 1 d c in 4th st from hook, 1 d c in next st, 2 d c in each of next 3 sts, 1 d c in each of last 2 sts (10 d c). Ch 3, turn, 1 d c in each st to end of row.

Repeat last row 3 times. Fasten off.

Foot – Ch 18, join with 1 d c in last d c worked, work 13 more d c on side edge, 3 d c in corner, 8 d c across instep, 3 d c in corner, 14 d c on side edge (42 d c), ch 21.

2nd row – 1 d c in 4th st from hook and in each st on ch, 1 d c in each st of row below and in each st on other ch (78 d c).

3rd row – Ch 3, turn, 1 d c in each st of row below.

Repeat 3rd row once.

5th row – Ch 3, turn, dec. 1 st as follows: thread over, draw up a loop in first st, over, take off 2 loops, over, draw up a loop in next st, over, take off 2 loops, over, take off 3 loops, work 34 d c, dec. 3 sts in next 6 sts, work 34 d c, dec. 1 st (73 d c). Ch 3, turn, 1 d c in each st of row below. Fasten off.

Leg – Join at center of heel (end of “ch 21” foundation ch), work 43 s c across foundation ch, top of instep and other foundation ch.

2nd row – Ch 4, turn, 1 d c in 3rd st, * ch 1, skip 1, 1 d c in next st; repeat from * to end (21 meshes).

3rd row – Ch 3, turn, 3 d c in first mesh, 1 s c in next d c, * ch 2, skip 1 mesh, 4 d c in next mesh, 1 s c in next d c; repeat from * to end (11 shell stripes).

4th, 5th and 6th row – Same as 10th row of yoke of sacque.

7th row – Same as 14th row of yoke. Repeat last row 4 times. Fasten off.

Finishing

Sew seams. Steam lightly, ribbon through beading and tie. Draw baby ribbon through beading and tie.
