REQUIRED MATERIALS

AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY The Famous “PURITAN” STAR SPANGLED CROCHET COTTON, Article 40, 9 Balls Aqua Spangle or Color of Your Choice OR The Famous “PURITAN” CROCHET COTTON, Article 40, 6 Balls Turquoise or Color of Your Choice
1/2 Yard Lining Material
32 Medium Size Pearl Beads
Steel Crochet Hooks No. 4 and No. 7

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

With No. 4 hook ch 95, d c in 4th st from hook, d c in next st of ch, * ch 1, skip 1 st of ch, 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts of ch, repeat from * across ch, ch 3, turn.

2nd Row – 1 d c in each of the next 2 d c, * ch 1, 1 d c in each of the next 3 d c, repeat from * across row, ch 3, turn.

Repeat the last row 22 times omitting ch 3 at end of last row, turn.

25th Row – (Beading) Ch 5, tr tr c (4 times over hook) in next d c, tr tr c in next d c, * ch 2, skip 1 d c, tr tr c in next d c, ch 2, skip 1 d c, 1 tr tr c in each of the next 3 d c, repeat from * across row, ch 3, turn.

26th Row – 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, * ch 1, skip 1 st of ch, d c in next st of ch, d c in next tr tr c, d c in next st of ch, ch 1, skip 1 st of ch, 1 d c in each of the next 3 tr tr c, repeat from * across row, ch 3, turn.

Next 3 Rows – Same as 2nd row.

Next Row – 2 d c in same space, s c in next ch 1 space, * ch 3, 2 d c in next d c, s c in next ch 1 space, repeat from * across row ending with s c in 3rd st of end ch, cut thread.

Attach thread in 1st st of starting ch at lower edge, ch 3, 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts, repeat from * across row, ch 3, turn.

Repeat from 2nd row for other half of bag.

Draw String

With No. 7 hook and single stand of thread ch 2, 6 s c in 2nd st from hook. Without joining rounds and working in back loop of sts throughout, work 1 s c in each s c until string stretches to 30 inches, cut thread.

Work another draw string in same manner. Cut lining to fit bag allowing 14 inch to turn under. Sew in position starting at lower edge of beading and sewing to same space at opposite beading.

Fold in half and sew side seams on wrong side. Fold corner to form a point having side seam at center of point and sew across 2 inches from point forming a triangle. Finish opposite corner in same manner. Turn right side out.

Lace draw string through beading, lacing over 1 tr tr c and under next group of tr tr c’s, starting each string from opposite side.

Knob

With double strand of thread and No. 4 hook work 1st 2 rounds same as for button on hat. Next 2 Rounds, work even in s c.

Next Round – * 1 s c in next s c, decrease in next 2 s c, repeat from * until 4 sts remain filling with cotton while decreasing, draw together. Make 3 more knobs in same manner and sew to each end of draw string. Finish with pearl beads as illustrated sewing to knobs and arranging as desired.
