REQUIRED MATERIALS
AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY “STAR” EAST HEAVY CROCHET MERCERIZED COTTON, Article 140
15 Balls White, 6 Balls Forest Green or Colors of your Choice
Steel Crochet Hooks No. 1 and No. 0
1/2 Yard 60″ Material for Napkins
NOTE(s)
Each motif measures 3 3/4 inches x 3 3/4 inches.
64 motifs (8 x 8) are required for cover.
The final size is 30 inches x 30 inches.
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
1st Motif
With White and No. 0 hook ch 29, s c in 3rd st from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 st of ch, s c in next st, repeat from * 12 times, ch 1, turn.
2nd Row – * S c over next ch 1 space, ch 1, repeat from * across row working last s c in turning ch, ch 1, turn.
Repeat the last row 21 times, cut thread.
Work 31 more motifs in same manner.
2nd Motif
With Forest Green and No. 0 hook, ch 29, d c in 4th st from hook, d c in next st of ch, * ch 2, skip 2 sts of ch, d c in next st, ch 2, skip 2 sts of ch, 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts, repeat from * twice, ch 3, turn.
2nd Row – 1 d c in each of the next 2 d c, * ch 2, d c in next d c, ch 2, 1 d c in each of the next 3 d c, repeat from * across row working last d c in 3rd st of end ch, ch 3, turn.
Repeat the last row 8 times, cut thread.
Work 31 more motifs in same manner.
Sew motifs together with “STAR” FAST HEAVY CROCHET as illustrated forming a checkerboard design.
Crocheting the Edge
With White using No. 1 hook and working firmly ch 19, s c in 3rd st from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 st of ch, s c in next st, repeat from * 8 times, ch 1, turn.
2nd Row – * S c over next ch 1 space, ch 1, repeat from * across row working last s c in turning ch, ch 1, turn.
Repeat last row until strip measures 30 inches.
Work 3 more strips in same manner.
Sew each strip to side of cover. Sew corners of strips together. Sew rings to sides of cover as illustrated.
Crocheting the Napkins
Cut 4 pieces of material 14 inches by 14 inches. Turn under a narrow hem all around and sew with “STAR” MERCERIZED SEWING THREAD.
Napkin Edge
With White and No. 0 hook ch 4, s c in 2nd st from hook, ch 1, skip 1 st of ch, s c in next st, ch 1, turn.
2nd Row – * S c in next ch 1 space, ch 1, s c in turning ch, ch 1, turn.
Repeat last row until piece is long enough to fit across one side of napkin, do not turn, working across long side, s c in same space, ch 1, skip 1 row, s c in next row (this forms corner), ch 1, turn. Repeat from * 3 times, join to 1st row, cut thread.
Sew around napkin sewing on top of hem.
Work 3 more napkins in same manner.
