How to Crochet a Potholder
REQUIRED MATERIALS

“STAR” Cotton Yarn Article 75
1 Skein Each of Yellow and Brown, 3 Yards Green
Crochet Hook – Steel 00
OR
“STAR” Rug Yarn Article 44
2 Skeins Yellow, 1 Skein Brown, 3 Yards Green
Crochet Hook – Steel 00
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
With Yellow ch 8, join to form a ring, * ch 3, 3 d c in ring, ch 3, turn.
2nd Row – 2 d c in same space, 3 d c in each of the next 2 d c, 3 d c in end ch, ch 3, turn.
3rd Row – 2 d c in same space, 1 d c in each d c working 3 d c in end ch, ch 3, turn.
4th Row – Same as last row but ch 1 to turn.
5th Row – 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 s d c in each of the next 2 sts (s d c: yarn over hook, insert in st, pullthrough, yarn over and pull through all loops at one time), 1 d c in each of the next 12 sts, 1 s d c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts, ch 1, turn.
Repeat last row twice, sl st down side of petal, sl st into ring, repeat from * twice, break Yellow.
Attach Brown in ring, ch 3 and work 4 d c in ring, ch 3, turn.
2nd Row – 2 d c in same space, 3 d c in each remaining st.
3rd and 4th Rows – Same as 3rd row of Yellow petal.
5th Row – 1 d c in each st, ch 1, turn.
6th Row – 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 s d c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 d c in each of the next 15 sts, 1 s d c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts, ch 1, turn.
Repeat last row twice, break Brown.
Attach Brown in ring and work 1 more petal in same manner, break Brown.
Work a row of s c around entire petal working Yellow on Brown petals and Brown on the 3 Yellow petals. With Green embroider the Yellow petals as illustrated using long and short stitches. Tack petals in position having the 2 Brown petals at top.
Pansy Potholder – Under Section
With Yellow ch 2, 8 s c in 2nd st from hook, join in 1st s c
2nd Row – Ch 1 and work 2 s c in each s c, do not join. Place a marker at beginning of each row.
3rd Row – Working in s c increase in every other s c.
4th Row – Increase in every 3rd s c.
5th Row – 1 s c in each of the next 2 s c, ch 8 for thumb opening, skip 6 s c, 1 s c in each remaining s c.
6th Row – * 1 s c in next st, 2 s c in next st, repeat from *all around working on ch in same manner.
7th and 8th Rows – Work even in s c.
9th Row – Increase in every 4th s c. Work 3 more rows of s c increasing a sufficient number of times in each row to keep work flat, break yarn.
Pansy Potholder – Thumb
With Yellow work 16 (12) s c around thumb opening and without joining rows, work 6 (3) more rows even.
Next Row – Decrease 4 (3) sts evenly spaced, then work 2 (1) rows even. Decrease every other st until 5 (3) sts remain, break yarn leaving an end. Thread into needle and draw together, fasten firmly.
Sew the 2 sections together having the thumb to right and leaving 2 Yellow petals free at lower edge. With Green cover a bone ring with s c and sew to top of holder.
