How to Crochet a Potholder
REQUIRED MATERIALS
To crochet this cute kitten potholder, use 2 balls of charcoal J. & P. Coats “Knit-Cro-Sheen”, a few yards each of pink and black embroidery floss and a number 1 steel crochet hook. You will need scraps of pink, white and grey felt, 2 gold beads, 1 gold and 2 green sequins and 1 bone ring.

Use double strands of thread throughout.
Abbreviations: sl st (slip stitch), dc (double crochet), sc (single crochet), dec (decrease), ch (chain), rnd (round)
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Starting at the top of head, ch 4.
Rnd 1: 11 dc in 4th ch from hook. Join with sl st in top of starting ch.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same st with sl st, 2 dc in each dc around. Join with sl st in ch 3.
Rnd 3, 4 and 5: Ch 3, * 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st in ch 3.
Rnd 6: Ch 3, dc in each of next 2 dc, * 2 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 3 dc. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st in ch 3.
Rnd 7: Ch 3, dc in each of next 3 dc, * 2 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 4 dc. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st in ch 3.
Rnds 8, 9, 10: Ch 3, dc in each of next 4 dc, * 2 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 5 dc. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st in ch 3.
To Shape Face – Kitten Potholder
Row 1: Ch 3, dc in each of next 50 sts, ch 3, turn. You are now ready to shape lower part of face and will work back and forth instead of around.
Row 2: Dec 1 st (to dec 1 st – work off 2 dc as 1 dc), dc in each dc across to within last 2 dc, dec 1 dc, ch 3, turn.
Rows 3 through 9: Dec 2 dc, dc in each dc across to within last 4 dc, dec 2 dc, ch 3, turn. Fasten off at end of row 9.
Back of Head – Kitten Potholder
Row 1: With right side toward you, join thread to last rnd of head in 45th st from left edge of face, ch 3, dc in each of next 50 dc, ch 3, turn. Complete in same manner as for face.
Cut eyes of white felt and tongue of pink felt. Sew eyes in place, then sew green sequins in center with gold beads. Sew gold sequin in place for nose. With pink, embroider mouth; with black, embroider whiskers.
Sew tongue in place. Line ears with pink felt. Line face and back of head with grey felt. Fold head in half.
Sew around outer edge, leaving outer edges of ears free. With one strand of charcoal, sc around bone ring and sew in place at top of head.
