Hat Potholder Pattern

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Use mercerized string weight thread to make this clever potholder; use a size 7 crochet hook. The model was made of red and white but any harmonizing colors would be desirable; when completed it measures about 6 inches in diameter.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Top of Hat Potholder

Ch 6, join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (for first dc), 15 dc in ring (16 in all), join with sl st in third ch st.

Rnd 2: Ch 3 (all rnds except rnd 8 are begun with ch 3 to form first dc), dc at base of ch 3, 2 dc in each dc around, join.

Rnd 3: 2 dc in dc, dc in next dc (48 dc), repeat around, join.

Rnd 4: Dc in each of eight dc, ch 2, repeat around, join.

Rnd 5: Dc in each dc, 4 dc over ch 2, repeat around, join.

Rnd 6: This rnd begins the decreasing to shape crown of hat. Dc in each of 3 dc, sk 1 dc, dc in each of next 3 dc, repeat around, join.

Rnd 7: Dc in each of 2 dc, sk 1 dc, dc in each of next 2 dc, repeat around, join.

Rnd 8: Make a ch 4 lp, sk 3 dc, sc in next, repeat around, join last ch 4 lp with a sl st at base of first lp (9 lps).

Rnd 9: This rnd is beginning of brim. Sl st into first lp, work 8 dc in each lp, join.

Rnd 10: Dc in each dc around (72 dc), join.

Rnd 11: Make a shell of 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in same st where joining was made, * ch 1, sk 3 dc, shell, repeat from * around, join, sl st to center of first shell (18 shells).

Rnd 12: Repeat rnd 11 with ch 2 between shells.

Rnd 13: * 3 dc in center of shell, ch 2, 1 dc over ch 2 between shells, ch 2, repeat from * around, join.

Rnd 14: * Dc in each dc, dc over ch 2 lp, 2 dc in 1 dc, dc in next ch lp, repeat from * around. Fasten off.

Back of Potholder

Ch 8, join in first ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, always count ch 3 as 1 dc, make 23 dc in ring.

Rnd 2: (Dc in each of 3 dc, ch 1) 8 times – this forms 8 sections of 3 dc each, join.

Rnd 3: * 2 dc in first dc, dc in dc, 2 dc in last dc, ch 1, repeat from * around, join.

Rnd 4, 5, 6, 7, 8: Same as rnd 3, work 2 dc in first and last dc of each section.

Rnd 9: Dc in each dc, 1 dc over ch 1, repeat around, join, place front on top of back facing you.

Rnd 10: Hold edge of front and back together, work through both thicknesses. Make a large shell of 6 dc between any 2 dcs, * sk 3 dc, sc in next, sk 3 dc, shell between third and fourth dcs. Repeat from * around, join. Fasten off.

Edge of Hat Potholder

With contrasting color, make a p edge of (ch 2, sl st in same st) in each dc around. Fasten off.

Crocheting the Ribbon

With color or variegated thread, ch 45, dc in third st from hook, dc in each st, ch 3, sl st in same ch st with last dc, ch 3, dc in remaining lp of each ch st. Fasten off.

Fold length of ribbon in half and fasten with blind stitch at beginning of brim.

Flowers for on the Hat Potholder

In color, ch 5, join, ch 4, sc in ring (ch 3, sc in ring) 3 times, ch 3, sl st in first st of ch 4. Make petal shells of 1 sc, 5 dc, 1 sc in each lp. Make 1 flower with only 3 petals.The flowers should be fastened on brim to the left of ribbon. A stem of outline stitch and lazy-daisy leaves may be added with green embroidery floss.

Fasten bone ring to top of panholder or make a loop of ch 10, join to pan-holder and sc around ch.
