Reversible Afghan – Free Crochet Blanket Pattern

This reversible afghan is beautiful and offers one side in plain navy and striped squares and the other side in plain navy and cherry squares.

This afghan is easy to crochet if you follow the simple, step-by-step instructions. This reversible crocheted afghan is perfect as an extra blanket for a small – or not so small – boy’s room.

Minerva Sports Yarn (2 ounce hall)
1 Ball – Sunlight Yellow No. 1403
1 Ball – Newport Green No. 1408
1 Ball – Pacific Pine No. 1409
13 Balls – Light Navy No. 1420
9 Balls – Scarlet No. 1410
1 Ball – White No. 1400

OR

Minerva Fingering Yarn (2 ounce skein)
1 Skein – Canary No. 1503
1 Skein – Carioca Green No. 1521
1 Skein – Woods Green No. 1517
13 Skeins – Light Navy No. 1527
9 Skeins – Cherry No. 1524
1 Skein – White No. 1500

This striped and plain square afghan is 45 x 55 inches.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

To Make a Striped Square

With Red Ch. 31, turn.

Row 1 – Work 30 S.C. on Ch., draw White through last loop on hook (drop Red but do not break), turn.

Row 2 – * Insert hook through back loop of first St. and then through corresponding Ch. below (3 loops on hook – thus working on White side), Y.O. and through 2 loops, Y.O. and through 2 loops, repeat from * in each St. across row (working loosely), Ch. 1, turn.

Row 3 – Work 1 S.C. in each St. across row, working only through both White loops, draw Red through last loop on hook, (drop White but do not break), turn.

Row 4 – * Insert hook through first Red St. in row below and then through front loop of White at top (3 loops on hook), Y.O. and through 2 loops, Y.O. and through 2 loops, repeat from * in each St. across row, Ch. 1, turn.

Row 5 – Work 1 S.C. in each St. across row, working only through both red loops, draw White through last loop on hook (drop Red but do not break), turn.

Row 6 – * Insert hook through back loop of first St. and also through corresponding St. of row below (3 loops on hook – thus working on White side), Y.O. and through 2 loops, Y.O. and through 2 loops, repeat from * in each St. across row, Ch. 1, turn.

Repeat Pattern from Row 3, (always working with Red for back of Square), changing colors every 2 or more rows for desired striping for Front, for 30 rows of striping.

To Make a Plain Square

Work in same manner as for Striped Square, using Navy only.

Work 49 Striped Squares (varying the striping).

Work 50 Navy Squares.

Sew Squares together (9 Squares wide and 11 Squares long) as illustrated.

Crocheting the Border

With double strand of Navy work 3 rows of D.C. around edge, increasing 2 Sts. in each corner to keep flat.
