Vintage Crochet Roll Brim Hat

REQUIRED MATERIALS

J & P Coats “Knit-Cro-Sheen” Metallic, Art. A.64:
7 balls of No. M61-D Nu-Ecru.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hooks No. 6 and No. 2/0 (double zero)
1/4 yard of beige felt
8 bone rings
Cotton batting

NOTE(S)

Gauge: 4 dc rnds makes 1 1/4 inches.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

The Hat

Starting at center of crown with No. 6 hook, ch 6. Join with sl st to form ring.

1st Rnd – Ch 3, 21 dc in ring. Join to top of ch-3.

2nd Rnd – Ch 3, dc in next dc, * ch 1, dc in next 2 dc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 1. Join to 3rd ch of ch-3.

3rd Rnd – Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, * ch 1, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join.

4th Rnd – Sl st in next dc and in next sp, ch 5, 2 dc in same sp, * skip 1 sp, in next sp make 3 dc, ch 2 and 3 dc (shell made). Repeat from * around, ending with 3 dc in same sp as first 2 dc, half dc in top of ch-3.

5th Rnd – Ch 3, 2 dc in sp just formed, * dc in last dc of this shell and in first dc of next shell, in sp of same shell make 3 dc, ch 2 and 3 dc (shell made over shell). Repeat from * around, always ending with 3 dc in same sp as first 2 dc and half dc in top of ch-3.

6th and 7th Rnds – Ch 3, 2 dc in sp of shell, * skip 3 dc of shell, dc in next dc, ch 1, dc in next dc, shell over next shell. Repeat from * around. Join.

8th Rnd – Ch 3, 2 dc in sp of shell, * dc in last dc of same shell, dc in next dc, ch 1, dc in next dc and in first dc of next shell, shell over smae shell. Repeat from * around. Join.

9th Rnd – Ch 3, 2 dc in sp of shell, * skip 3 dc of shell, (dc in next dc, ch 1) 3 times; dc in next dc, shell over next shell. Repeat from * around. Join.

10th Rnd – Ch 3, 2 dc in sp of shell, * skip 3 dc of shell, 2 dc in next dc, (ch 1, dc in next dc) twice; ch 1, 2 dc in next dc, shell over next shell. Repeat from * around. Join.

11th to 18th Rnds – Ch 3, 2 dc in sp of shell, * skip 3 dc of shell, dc in next 2 dc, (ch 1, dc in next dc) twice; ch 1, dc in next 2 dc, shell over next shell. Reepat from * around. Join.

19th Rnd – Sc in loop just formed, ch 4, * skip 3 dc of shell, dc in next 2 dc, (ch 1, dc in next dc) twice; ch 1, dc in next 2 dc, ch 4, sc in sp of next shell. Repeat from * around. Join and turn.

The Rolled Brim

1st Rnd – Sc in same place as sl st, sc in each ch and in each sc around.

2nd to 11th Rnds – Sc in each sc around.

12th Rnd – Sc in each sc, decreasing 11 sc evenly around – to dec 1 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc

13th and 14th Rnds – Sc in each sc around. Turn. Sl in each sc around, drawing in slightly. Break off.

Place cotton batting around brim. Roll brim back and sew in place.
