Miss America Potholder - Free Crochet Pattern

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Art. 600 Lily Cotton Yarn Skeins or
Art. 930 Sugar ‘N Cream Yarn Balls
1 Skein or Ball Tea Rose and
Art. 21 Lily Six Strand Floss
3 Skeins Med. Brown and 1 Skein each Dark Brown and Scarlet
Crochet Hooks Nos. 0 and 5

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Miss America Potholder – Face

With Tea Rose and No. 0 hook, ch 17, sk 3 ch, sc in next 2 ch, hdc in next 2 ch, dc in next 2 ch, holding back the last lp of each dc on hook, make dc in next 2 ch, yarn over and draw thru all lps on hook (Cluster-decrease made), dc in next 2 ch, hdc in next 2 ch, sc in next ch, sc and hdc in end ch.

Row 2 – Ch 3, turn, hdc and sc in 1st hdc, sc in each st across with sc, hdc and dc in end ch-3.

Row 3 – Repeat Row 2.

Row 4 – Ch 3, turn, sc in each st across with sc and hdc in end ch-3.

Row 5 – Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across to end ch-3.

Row 6 – Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.

Row 7 – Ch 3, turn, sc in each sc across with sc and hdc in end sc.

Repeat Row 5 once and Row 6 four times (thru Row 12).

Row 13 – Ch 1, turn, sk 1 sc, sc in each remaining st across with a sc-decrease in 2 end sc. (To decrease, draw up a lp in each of 2 end sc, yarn over and draw thru all 3 lps on hook).

Rows 14-16 – Repeat Row 6 three times.

Repeat Row 13 four times (thru Row 20).

Row 21 – Ch 1, turn, sk 1 sc, sl st in next sc, sc in next 3 sc, hdc in next 2 sc, dc in next 4 sc, hdc in next 2 sc, sc in next 2 sc, sl st in next sc. Work sc closely around edge, join and fasten off.

Miss America Potholer – Hair

With Med. Brown Floss and No. 5 hook, ch 65, sk 1 ch, sc in next 3 ch, hdc in next 2 ch, (2 dc in next ch) 6 times, dc in next 4 ch, * (dc in next 2 ch made into a Cluster-decrease) 4 times, dc in next 2 ch, (2 dc in next ch) 6 times, * dc in next 8 ch. Repeat from * to * once. Dc in next 8 ch, hdc in end ch.

Row 2 – Ch 1, turn, sc in 1st 2 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next 8 sts, (2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc) 4 times, 2 dc in next dc, (dc in next 3 dc made into a decrease) 3 times, dc in next 4 dc, (2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc) 6 times, (dc in next 3 dc made into a decrease) 3 times, (dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc) 5 times, (hdc in next dc, 2 hdc in next dc) twice, sc in next 4 sts, sl st in next st. Fasten off.

Make a 2d piece. Sew one on each side of Face, turning one piece wrong-side-up. At joining in center of forehead embroider 4 long stitches for bangs.

Miss America Potholder – Lips

With Scarlet ch 12, sk 1 ch, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, 2 dc in next ch, dc in next ch, hdc in next 2 ch, (2 dc in next ch) twice, hdc in next ch, sc in end ch. Working back on other side of ch, make sc in same end ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 2 ch, (2 dc in next ch) 3 times, dc in next 2 ch, hdc in next ch, sl st in end st. Fasten off.

Sew on center of Rows 3 and 4 of Face.

Eye for Miss America Potholder

With Dk. Brown ch 4, 3 dc, hdc and sc in 4th ch from hook, ch 19, turn, sl st in top of starting ch-4. Fasten off. Make 2.

Sew on Rows 11 to 13, 1 1/4″ apart, as illustrated.

Make 1/4″ long stitches out from eyelids for eyelashes. Using a scrap of White Floss embroider a small “V” at top of each iris slightly to right of center. Embroider eyebrows across Row 17, 1 1/4″ apart.

Steam and press holder dry on back thru a cloth. Line back with cloth. Cover a bone ring with sc in Med. Brown and sew at top.
