REQUIRED MATERIALS
BEAR BRAND or BUCILLA 4-fold Zephyr Germantown: 24 balls Green No. 985, 14 balls Black, 3 balls Grey No. 461, 4 balls Grey No. 464
1 Celluloid Crochet Hook No. 4, of even thickness (for afghan stitch)

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Green-Center Squares for Couch Cover
With green, ch 14, draw up a loop through the horizontal bar in the back of second and all succeeding chs, retaining all 14 loops on hook. This is half of an afghan stitch row. Work back as follows: yarn over and through end loop, * over and through 2 loops, repeat from * until only 1 loop remains on hook.
2nd Row – The loop that remains on hook is the first st of this row; insert hook under the perpendicular thread (or bar) in front of second st below and draw up a loop, * insert hook under perpendicular bar of next st and draw up a loop; repeat from * to end, retaining all 14 loops on hook; work back as directed for first row.
Repeat 2nd row until there are 13 rows from beginning.
14th Row – Draw up a loop under bar of second st as usual, hut draw it also through loop on hook, * draw up a loop under next bar and draw it also through loop on hook; repeat from * to end, thus binding off all sts.
1st Row Around Squares – Turn, ch 3, working from wrong side, make 2 d c in same st as ch 3 (comer st), * 1 d c in each of the next 6 sts, taking up both threads of st below, ch 1, 1 d c in each of the next 6 sts, 3 d c in next st (corner st), ch 1, 3 more d c in same corner st, 1 d c on edge of each of the first 6 rows on side of square, ch 1, 1 d c on each of the next 6 rows, 3 d c on next row (corner st), ch 1, 3 more d c in same st; repeat from * on remaining 2 sides, ending with 3 d c in same place as the 2 d c at beginning of round, ch 1 and join with a slip st in top of ch 3.
2nd Round – Ch 4, turn, 3 d c in corner space, * skip first d c, 1 d c on back thread of each of the next 6 d c, skip 2 d c, 3 d c in next space (made by ch 1 in row below), skip 2 d c, 1 d c in back thread of each of the next 6 d c, 3 d c in comer space, ch 1, 3 more d c in same space; repeat from * around, ending with 2 d c in same space as the 3 d c at beginning of round, join with a slip st in 3rd st of turning chain.
3rd Round – Ch 4, turn, 3 d c in corner space, * skip 3 d c, 2 d c in next space, 1 d c on back thread of each of the next 4 d c, skip 2 d c, 3 d c in each of the next 2 spaces, skip 2 d c, 1 d c on back thread of each of the next 4 d c, 2 d c in next space, 3 d c in corner space, ch 1, 3 more d c in same space; repeat from * around, ending with 2 d c in same comer as the first 3 d c; join with a slip st in 3rd st of turning chain.
4th Round – Turn, ch 4, 3 d c in corner space, * 2 d c in next space, 1 d c on back thread of each of the next 4 d c, skip 2 sts, 3 d c in each of the next 3 spaces, skip 2 d c, 1 d c on back thread of each of the next 4 d c, 2 d c in next space, 3 d c in corner space, ch 1, 3 more d c in same space; repeat from * around, ending as in 3rd round.
5th Round – Turn, ch 4, 3 d c in comer space, * 2 d c in next space, 1 d c on back thread of each of the next 4 d c, 3 d c in each of the next 4 spaces, skip 2 d c, 1 d c on back thread of each of the next 4 d c, 2 d c in next space, 3 d c in corner space, ch 1, 3 more d c in same space; repeat from * around, ending as in preceding rounds; break off.
6th Round – Turn, with black, work 3 d c in corner space, * 2 s c in next space, 1 s c on back thread of each of the next 4 sts, 3 d c in each of the next 5 spaces, skip 2 d c, 1 s c on back thread of each of the next 4 d c, 2 s c in next space, 3 d c in corner space, ch 1, 3 more d c in same space; repeat from * around, ending with 2 d c in same comer space as the 3 d c at beginning of round; ch 1 and join with a slip st in top of next d c; break off.
Make 23 of these squares for this couch cover; each square should measure about 7 3/4 inches.
Black – Center Squares for Couch Cover
Using black yarn, follow directions for afghan-stitch center in green squares; break off black. With green, follow directions for the 5 green rows around afghan-stitch-center in green squares, then work the 6th round also in green, following directions for 6th round (black) of green squares.
Make 16 of these black-center squares for this couch cover.
Border Squares for Couch Cover
Work the afghan-stitch-centers in black, following the directions for afghan-stitch-centers in green squares; break off black. Work 6 rows around this center, following directions for the corresponding 6 rounds of green squares, but using colors as follows: 1st round: green; 2nd round: black; 3rd round: grey No. 461; 4th round: black; 5th round: grey No. 464; 6th round: black. Begin each round with 3 d c in corner space, end with 3 d c in same space, ch 1, join with a slip st in top of first d c, and break off.
Quarter-Squares in Border of Couch Cover
With grey No. 464, ch 8, work 6 rows in afghan-stitch, binding off in 6th row – as described for 14th row of afghan-stitch-center in green squares; break off grey. With green, and working from wrong side of grey piece, make 1 d c in each of the 6 sts in last grey row, 3 d c in corner st, ch 1, 3 more d c in same corner st, 1 d c on edge of each of the 6 rows; fasten off.
2nd Row – Turn, with black, make 1 d c in first green st, ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 d c on back thread of each of the next 6 sts, 3 d c in corner space, ch 1, 3 more d c in same space, skip 1 d c, 1 d c on back thread of each of the next 6 d c, ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 d c on last green d c; fasten off.
