This afghan has a tailored air. The squares are crocheted in stitch on stitch. This makes a great blanket for a guy’s room or can be used as a car cover too! This crochet pattern is free for personal use.
Crocheted Afghan Pattern:
‘Alma Mater’ Afghan
REQUIRED MATERIALS
Minerva Afghan Germantown (2 ounce skein)
10 Skeins Brown (or any dark color)
OR
Minerva Knitting Worsted (4 ounce skein)
8 Skeins Brown (or any dark color)
3/4 yard of cloth or felt material for Border
1 Composition Crochet Hook Standard Size 5-6 inch
NOTE(s)
Gauge: 5 S.C. to 1 inch
This crochet pattern makes an afghan about 41 x 43 inches.
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
To Make a Star Stitch Square
Ch. 20.
Row 1 – 1 S.C. in each Ch. (25 Sts.), turn.
Row 2 – Ch. 2, pick up a loop in 2nd Ch. from hook (always picking up back loop only) and in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd St. (5 loops on hook), then Y.O. hook and through all loops, Ch. 1 to form eye of Star (first Star St.), * pick up 1 loop in eye of Star, 1 loop in back of Star, 1 loop in each of the next 2 Sts. (5 loops on hook), Y.O. and through all loops, Ch. 1, repeat from * across (12 Stars), turn.
Row 3 – Ch. 1, work 25 S.C. across row, turn.
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 – 7 times more (17 rows from start).
Make 63 Squares and sew together 7 hy 9 as illustrated.
Making the Border
Bind edge with 4 inch cloth or felt material folded in half.
Cut initials from same material and sew in place.
