Crochet a Stylish Ladies Hat
REQUIRED MATERIALS
Hiawatha Super Chenille Art. 66 – 2 Skeins
Hiawatha Super Twist Rayon Cord Art. 41 – 1 Tube
Steel Crochet Hook No. 0
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
With Chenille, make 4″ chain.
Rnd 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, work 5 sc in end ch, do not turn but work sc in each st along other side of starting ch, ending with 5 sc in last ch.
Rnd 2: * Sc in each st to 5 end sts; 2 sc in next st, (sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) twice. Repeat from * once more. (6 sts inc. – 3 at each end).
Rnd 3: Continue in sc, inc. 3 sts around curve at each end (not directly over inc. of previous rnd).
Repeat rnd 3 until oval measures about 4″ wide.
Work 1 rnd even.
Next Rnd: Inc. 3 sts around curve at each end.
Work 1 rnd even.
Repeat last 2 rnds until piece measures 5 1/2″ wide and about 8 1/2″ long. Place a marker at center of each long edge for center back and front.
Shaping for Crochet Chenille Hat
Rnd 1: Work to center front, dec. 1 st at center, work even to center back, dec. 1 st at center, now inc. 3 sts around remaining curve for deeper side of hat.
Repeat last rnd until hat measures 4 1/2″ from center front to center of starting chain.
Next Rnd: Work even in sc.
Following Rnd: Dec. at center front and back as before, increasing only 2 sts around curve at deeper side.
Repeat last 2 rnds until hat is desired depth, ending with even rnd. SI st in next st. Fasten off.
Crochet Chenille Hat – Trimming
Edging: With Cord make 25″ chain.
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch until row is long enough to fit easily around lower edge of hat. Join with sl st into ring, being careful not to twist. Cut off remaining ch.
Row 2: * Sl st in each of next 4 sts, ch 3, sl st in base of ch-3, (picot made). Repeat from * around. Fasten off.
Side Motif: Ch 14.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of next 3 ch, skip next ch, sc in each of next 4 ch, disregard remaining end of starting ch. Ch 9, turn.
Row 2: Skip 7 sc, sl st in last sc, sc at base of same sc. Ch 5, turn.
Row 3: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of next 3 ch, skip next 2 sts, sc in each of next 4 ch, 3 sc in next (center) ch, sc in each of next 4 ch, sc in each of last 4 sts of starting ch. Ch 9, turn.
Row 4: Skip 9 sc, sc in next (center) sc of 3rd row, ch 9, sc in end sc, sl st at base of same sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 5: *Skip 2 sts, sc in each of next 4 ch, 3 sc in next ch, sc in each of next 4 ch, skip next sc, sc in each of next 4 ch, 3 sc in next ch, sc in each of next 4 ch, sl st in end st (2 scallops made), Ch 14, turn.
Row 6: Sc in center st of next scallop, ch 9, sc in center st of next scallop, ch 14, skip 4 sts, sc in each of next 2 sts. Turn.
Row 7: Skip 2 sts, * sc in each of next 4 ch. 3 sc in next ch. Repeat from * once more, sc in each of next 4 ch, skip next sc, sc in each of next 4 ch, 3 sc in next ch, sc in each of next 4 ch, skip next sc, ** sc in each of next 4 ch, 3 sc in next ch. Repeat from ** once more, sc in each of next 4 ch, sl st in end of starting ch, Fasten off.
Crochet Chenille Hat – Tassels (Make 5)
Wrap Cord 40 times around 5 1/2″ cardboard. Tie tog. at top end. Slip off card. Wind another strand several times tightly around tassel, 1/2″ below top. Fasten securely. Cut ends and trim. Sew one tassel to each end of last row of Side Motif. Sew remaining 3 tassels to 3 points of scallops. Sew edging around hat, being careful not to pull stitches too tight. Tack Motif in place on deep side as pictured. Steam.
