Ripple Brim Bag Pattern
REQUIRED MATERIALS
Coats & Clark’s O.N.T “Speed-Cro-Sheen” Mercerized Cotton, Art. C.44: 7 balls of No. 51 Spice.
Milwards Steel Crochet Hook: No. 2/0 (double zero)
1/4 yard each of brown felt and buckram for lining
5 packages of Walco gold drop beads, Style No. 7368
12 packages of Walco gold drop beads, Style No. 7336
3 round cork molds, 1 inch in diameter and two 3/4 in in diameter, Style No. 6060.
NOTE(S)
Gauge: 5 sc make 1 inch; 6 rnds make 1 inch.
There is also a pattern for a matching hat. The ‘required materials’ are what is required to make BOTH the bag and matching hat.
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
The Bag
Starting at center bottom, ch 2.
1st Rnd – 7 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in each sc, increasing 7 sc evenly on each rnd until piece measures 7 inches in diameter.
Next Rnd – Picking up back loop only, sc in each sc around.
The Side Piece
Sc in each sc until side piece measures 6 inches.
Next Rnd – Picking up back loop only, sc in each sc around.
The Top
1st Rnd – * Sc in next 4 sc, dec 1 sc. Repeat from * around.
2nd Rnd – * Sc in next 3 sc, dec 1 sc. Repeat from * around. Work without decreasing until top measures 3 inches. Sl st in next sc.
The Beading
Ch 5, * skip 2 sc, dc in next sc, ch 2. Repeat from * around. Join to 3rd ch of ch-5.
Next Rnd – Sc in same place as sl st, make 2 sc in each sp and sc in each dc around. Sc in each sc for 5 more rounds.
Next Rnd – Sc in next sc, * skip 1 sc, 5 dc in next sc, skip 1 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join and break off. Line bottom and 6 inches of side of bag with felt and buckram. Trim bag with beads.
The Cord (Make 2)
Using 4 strands, make a chain 24 inches long. Break off. Draw through beading at top of bag. Cover 2 remaining corks as before. Trim with beams and attach to each end of cord.
