Bucilla Wonder-Knit, Article 3777: 5 skeins Main Color (A)
1 skein Dark Tone (B)
1 skein Light Tone (C)
Steel Crochet Hook, Size 0

Gauge: 5 sts = 1 inch 3 dc and 3 sc rows = 2 inches

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Half (Make 2)

With A ch 75 for lower edge.

Row 1 – Slip st in 2nd ch from hook and each remaining ch; (74 sts in row).

Row 2 – Ch 3, turn, skip first slip st, 1 dc in both loops of each of next 9 slip sts, * 1 dc in top loop of each of next 6 slip sts (thus leaving 6 free loops), 1 dc in both loops of each of next 10 slip sts; rpt from * 3 times; (74 dc in row, including ch 3).

Row 3 (right side) – Ch 1, turn, lay a strand each of B and C on top of work, working over B and C, 1 sc in each of first 10 dc, * working off last sc with B (thus changing to B; keep yarn not in use on wrong side of work), with B 1 tr (yo twice) in each of first 3 free loops below, working off last 2 loops of last tr with C, with C 1 tr in each of next 3 free loops below, working off last 2 loops of last tr with A (a Cable Stripe), always skip 6 dc behind Cable Stripe, with A, working over B and C, 1 sc in each of next 10 dc; rpt from * 3 times (last sc is worked in turning ch); at end, cut off B and C; (4 Cable Stripes in row).

Row 4 – Ch 3, turn, skip first sc, 1 dc in each of next 9 sc, * 1 dc in front loop of each of 6 sts of Cable Stripe (thus leaving 6 back loops of B and C free), 1 dc in each of next 10 sc; rpt from * 3 times; (74 dc in row).

Row 5 – Ch 1, turn, working as before over B and C, 1 sc in each of first 10 dc, * working off last sc with C, skip 3 free B loops below, with C 1 long tr (yo 3 times) in each of next 3 free C loops, working off last 2 loops of last long tr with B, with B 1 long tr in first and each of next 2 free B loops just skipped, working off last 2 loops of last long tr with A (thus crossing Cable Stripe), working over B and C, 1 sc in each of next 10 dc; rpt from * 3 times; at end, cut off B and C.

Row 6 – Rpt row 4.

Row 7 – Rpt row 3, only change first to C then to B.

Row 8 – Rpt row 4.

Row 9 – Rpt row 5, only change first to B then to C.

Row 10 – Rpt row 4.

Row 11 – Rpt row 3.

Rpt last 8 rows until 31 rows from beginning.

Row 32 – Ch 3, turn, skip first st, 1 dc in each remaining st.

Row 33 – Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first st, work 1 dec. as follows: draw up a loop in each of next 2 sts, yo, thru all 3 loops on hook (1 dee.), * 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, work 1 dec; rpt from * 13 times, 1 sc in last st; (59 sc in row).

Rpt row 32.

Row 35 – Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st across.

Rpt last 2 rows once. Ch 1, working down side edge of work, 2 sc at end of each dc row and 1 sc at end of each sc row, fasten off; work other side edge to match.

Crocheting the Gusset

With A ch 10, 1 dc in 4th eh from hook, 1 dc in each of last 6 chs.

Row 2 – Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st across; (8 sc in row).

Row 3 – Ch 3, turn, skip first st, 1 dc in each remaining st.

Rpt last 2 rows to row 99, then ch 1, 2 sc in end of each dc row and 1 sc in end of each sc row to corner, 3 sc in corner, 1 se in each st across, 3 sc in corner; continue around, join with slip st in first sc, fasten off.

Crocheting the Handles

With B ch 5, 1 dc in 4th ch from hook, 1 dc in last ch.

Rpt row 3 of Gusset 35 times, fasten off (1 Stripe).

With B make 1 more Stripe. Make 2 Stripes with C, 2 Stripes with A.

Finishing this Vintage Bag

From wrong side (starting and ending at row 23 of Half), with A sew Gusset in place with an over hand st between 2 Halves taking up top loop of sts only. Fold last 6 rows of each Half over dowel, sew to wrong side firmly.

To finish Handle: – twist a flat cable of 1 Strip each of B and C, tacking twists firmly, line cable with Stripe A. Sew ends of Handle to inside of Bag at first and last Cable.
