J and P Coats or Clark’s ONT PEARL COTTON, Size 5
6 Balls of Hunter’s Green
CHADWICK’s RED HEART KNITTING WORSTED
3 Balls (1 oz. balls) of Wood Brown
Bone Crochet Hook No. 5
9 Inch Zipper
1/2 Yard Each of Buckram and Felt for Lining
A Ring – 1 1/2 Inches in Diameter
NOTE(s)
Use wool single and cotton double throughout.
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Bag Piece
Starting at center of bottom with Brown, ch 31.
1st rnd: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, 3 sc in last ch. Working across opposite side of starting chain, make sc in each ch across (62 sc).
2nd rnd: 2 sc in next 3 sc. Sc in each sc to next 3-sc group, 2 sc in next 3 sc, sc in each sc to end of rnd (68 sc).
3rd rnd: Sc in each sc around. Sl st in next sc.
4th rnd: Ch 3, dc in same st as sl st, * skip 1 sc, sc in next sc, skip 1 sc, 4 dc in next sc (shell). Repeat from * around, ending with 2 dc, sl st in top st of ch-3. Drop Brown (17 shells).
5th rnd: Draw Green through loop on hook. Ch 1, sc in joining st and in each st around, sl st in 1st sc. Drop Green.
6th rnd: Draw Brown through loop on hook. Sc in joining st, * skip 1 sc, 4 dc in next sc, skip 2 sc, sc in next sc 2 rows below. Repeat from * around, ending with a sl st in 1st sc. Drop Brown.
7th rnd: Same as 5th rnd.
8th rnd: Draw Brown through loop on hook. Ch 3, dc in joining st, * skip 2 sc, sc in next sc 2 rows below, skip 1 sc, 4 dc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join.
Repeat the last 4 rnds (5th to 8th rnds incl) until there are 8 rnds of shells. Now work as before, making only 3 dc instead of 4 dc in each shell and skipping only 1 sc after each shell until there are 4 rnds of 3-dc shells.
Make a rnd of sc in Green and 2 rnds of sc in Brown. Sl st in 1st sc. Break off.
Handle
With Brown, ch 40. Draw chain through ring, join.
1st rnd: Sc in each ch around.
2nd to 5th rnds incl: Sc in each sc around, sl st in next sc. Break off.
With Green, ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Break off.
Sew this chain around Handle abuve ring.
Tab
With Brown, ch 16.
1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn.
2nd and 3rd rows: Sc in each sc across. Break off. Draw through ring and sew ends together.
Cut a piece of cardboard for bottom, then line bag with buckram and lining material. Sew zipper and tab in place.
