Flower Basket Potholder – Free Crochet Potholder Pattern

Flower Basket Potholder

REQUIRED MATERIALS

The basket measures 9 1/2 inches from top of handle to base of basket. The original was made of number 20 weight white mercerized crochet thread; use a size 8 or 9 steel crochet hook.

Trim in any desired accent color.

NOTE(s)

Abbreviations: Ch (chain); sts (stitches); dc (double crochet); lp (loop); sc (single crochet); sl st (slip stitch); rnd (round); sk (skip); sp (space); hdc (half double crochet) – thread over, insert hook in third st from hook, draw thread through, thread over and pull through all lps at once.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Starting at base of basket, in white, ch 33, turn.

Rnd 1: Dc in 4th st of ch, dc in each of remaining 29 sts, turn. Continue with 30 dc across – working in free lp of each ch st, thus making 2 dc in each ch, join with sl st in top of ch 4. There are 60 dc in all.

Rnds 2, 3: Ch 3 for a dc, dc in each of next 59 sts, join with si st in top of ch 3. All rnds are joined in this manner.

Rnd 4: Sl st in first 5 sts, ch 3, dc in each of next 19 sts, sk 10 sts, dc in each of next 20 sts, join. This forms the stem of basket.

Rnds 5, 6: Ch 3, dc in each st around (40 dc in all), join.

Rnd 7: Ch 3 (counts as a dc), (dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in sl st of previous rnd – this becomes an outer edge of basket. Ch 1, sk 2 dc, 3 dc in next dc, ch 1, continue across making 6 groups of 3 dc on one side of basket, then ch 1, sk 2 dc, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next dc – this is the other outer edge of basket. Continue on this side same as for other side. End with ch 1, join.

Rnd 8: Sl st over to ch 2, ch 3, (dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same sp – shell made, * ch 1, 3 dc over ch between 3 dc groups of previous rnd, repeat from * around, making a shell (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) over shell. On each edge of basket there is a shell over shell, with the 3 dc groups and ch 1 around; join.

Rnds 9 through 17: Repeat rnd 8. Fasten off at end of rnd 17.

Rnd 18: Join desired color and repeat rnd 8, fasten off.

Rnd 19, 20: Join white and repeat rnd 8. Join and fasten off.

You should have 19 groups of 3 dc on each side of basket.

Handle of Flower Basket Potholder

Sk the first 5 groups of dcs, join white and ch 3 (count as a dc), * dc in each of next 3 dc, dc over ch, repeat from * until 36 dcs are made – 37 including the first ch 3, turn.

Rows 2, 3: Ch 3, dc in each dc across (37 dcs).

Row 4: Sl st across 5 dcs, then ch 3, dc in each of next 26 dcs (27 in all), ch 3, turn.

Rows 5, 6: Repeat row 4.

Row 7: Sl st across 5 dc, ch 3, dc in each of next 16 dcs (17 in all); ch 3, turn.

Rows 8, 9: Repeat row 7.

Row 10: Sl st across 5 dcs, ch 3, dc in each of next 6 dc (7 in all), ch 3, turn.

Repeat this last row 5 times, fasten off.

Make handle on other side the same as for first side. The top of handles can be joined with si st or sew with invisible stitches.

Fold basket and with contrasting thread, join in left hand corner of basket, sc over the two middle dcs of shell at corner edge, ch 3 for a picot, make 5 sc down side of basket, p.

Continue around basket, making sure the picots match on both sides and that a picot is at each corner. The narrow portion of handle has no picots – only sc on both sides. Fasten off.

Pattern for the Rose

Rnd 1: In pink, yellow or red, ch 5, si st to form ring, ch 3 for 1 dc, make 19 dc in ring (20 dc in all), sl st in top of ch 3.

Rnd 2: Ch 5, sk 3 dc, sc in next, repeat around, sl st at base of first ch 5.

Rnd 3: (1 sc, 1 hdc, 5 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc) in each ch 5 lp, ch 1, sl st in back of st where ch 5 is joined.

Rnd 4: (Ch 6, sc in back of same st as in rnd 2) 5 times.

Rnd 5: (1 sc, 1 hdc, 7 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc) in each ch 6 lp, ch 1, sl st in back of same st.

Rnd 6: (Ch 7, sc in back of same st as in rnd 2) 5 times.

Rnd 7: (1 sc, 1 hdc, 9 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc) in each ch 7 lp, sl st in first sc. Fasten off.

With green thread and a lazy daisy stitch, sew the flower to lower portion of basket as shown in sketch.
