REQUIRED MATERIALS

The original was made of American Thread Company De Luxe Crochet Cotton. You will need two balls of yellow, one ball of black and one ball of white thread. Use a steel crochet hook number 5.

NOTE(s)

Abbreviations: Ch (chain); dc (double crochet); sc (single crochet); sl st (slip stitch); lp (loop); sdc or hdc (short or half double crochet) – thread over hook, insert in st, pull lp through, thread over and pull through all lps at once; pc st (popcorn st) – 4 dc in st, drop lp off hook, insert in first dc, pick up lp and pull through, ch 1 to tighten st.

The hot pad is worked with a double strand of thread throughout.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

With black, ch 6, join to form a ring, ch 1 and work 8 sc in ring, join.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc, join.

Rnd 3: Ch 3, 3 dc in same st, sl lp off hook, insert in third st of ch, pick up lp and pull through, ch 2, * (4 dc in next st, drop lp off hook, insert in first dc, pick up lp and pull through, ch 1 to tighten st) – a popcorn st, ch 1, repeat from * all around (16 pc sts), sl st in third st of ch, drop black.

Rnd 4: Join yellow, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, * 3 dc between next 2 pc sts, repeat from * around, join, drop yellow. When changing color always complete last half of st with next color.

Rnd 5: With black, ch 3, pc st in next dc, * dc in next dc, pc st in next dc, repeat from * all around, join in third st of ch.

Rnd 6: Ch 1, work 2 sc in each dc and 1 sc in each pc st (72 sc), join, fasten off.

Rnd 7: With yellow, ch 3, 1 dc in each of the next 8 sts, * ch 2, 1 dc in each of the next 9 sts, repeat from * around, ch 2, join.

Rnd 8: Ch 3, dc in same st, 1 dc in each of the next 7 dc, 2 dc in next dc, * ch 2, 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of the next 7 dc, 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * all around, ch 2, join.

Rnd 9: Ch 3, * 1 dc in same st, 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc, ch 2, dc in next dc, repeat from * around ending row with ch 2, join.

Rnd 10: Ch 3, 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of the next 7 dc, 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, ch 2, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, repeat from * around ending row with ch 2, join.

Rnd 11: Ch 3, dc in same st, * 1 dc in each of the next 15 dc, 2 dc in next dc, ch 2, 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * around ending row with ch 2, join.

Rnd 12: Ch 3, dc in same st, * 1 dc in each of the next 5 dc, 1 sdc or hdc in each of the next 2 dc, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, 1 sdc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 5 sts, 2 dc in next st, ch 2, 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * around ending row with ch 2, join.

Rnd 13: Ch 3, 1 dc in each of the next 5 sts, * 1 sdc in each of the next 3 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, 1 sdc in each of the next 3 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 6 sts, ch 2, 1 dc in each of the next 6 sts, repeat from * around ending row with ch 2, join.

Join white in first st of any petal, 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in each of the next 12 sts, sk next st, 1 sc in each st across remainder of same petal, 1 sc in sl st, ch 3, sc over the ch-2 lp of 13th row, working between petals, ch 2, sc over ch-2 lp of 12th row, continue working an sc over each ch-2 lp with ch 2 between each sc down to the black row, sl st in black row, ch 2, turn and work up to top in same manner, repeat from beginning all around, join, fasten off.
