How to Crochet a Sweater/Cardigan
REQUIRED MATERIALS
Sultana Beautysheen (All Rayon), 8 balls
Steel Crochet Hook, Sise 4

Gauge: 10 sts = l inch; 13 rows = 4 inches
Measurements – Width at underarm 10 1/4 inches. Length from lower edge to shoulder 10 1/2 inches. Sleeves – Witlth at armhole 9 inches.
STEP-BY-STEP DIRECTIONS
Back
Border – Ch 92, 1 d c in 4th st from hook and in each st on ch (90 sts, including turning ch).
2nd row (wrong side) – Ch 3, turn, 1 d c in 2nd st of row below, 1 d c in each st, end 1 d c in top of turning ch.
Repeat 2nd row once.
Pattern – First row – Ch 3, turn, 1 d c in 2nd st of row below and in each of next 3 sts, * ^ thread over hook twice, draw up a loop in next st, over, through 2 loops, over, skip 1 st, draw up a loop in next st; over, through 2 loops 4 times; ch 2, 1 d c in st where 3 arms of X meet ^, 1 d c in each of next 4 sts; repeat from *, end last repeat 1 d c in each of last 4 sts, 1 d c in top of turning ch (102 sts; 12 X patterns and 13 squares).
2nd row – Ch 3, turn, beg. in 2nd d c, * repeat between f’s of first row skipping 2 sts for X instead of 1 st, 1 d c in first d c of X, 1 d c in each of 2 ch, 1 d c in other d c of X *; repeat between *’s, end 1 d c in top of turning ch (102 sts; 13 X’s and 12 squares).
3rd row – Ch 3, turn, 1 d c in d c of X, 1 d c in each of 2 ch, 1 d c in other d c of X; repeat between *’s of 2nd row, end 1 d c in top of turning ch.
Repeat 2nd and 3rd row until 6 inches from beg., or desired length to underarm, end with 3rd row.
Sleeves
Ch 21, turn, 1 slip st in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in next st, 1 h d c in next st, 1 d c in each of next 2 sts, repeat from * of first row (skipping 2 sts for X on ch) across row; join separate strand in top of turning ch of row below, ch 20; fasten off; continue pattern across 15 sts of ch, 1 d c in each of next 2 sts, 1 h d c, 1 s c, 1 slip st.
Repeat last row twice. Ch 14, turn, 1 d c in 4th st from hook and in each of next 3 sts, repeat from * of first pattern row across row; join separate thread in row below, ch 12; fasten off; continue pattern on these sts, end 1 d c in each of last 5 sts (246 sts; 30 X patterns and 31 squares).
Work pattern even until 10 inches from beg., end with 2nd row.
Neck
First row – Work pattern as in 3rd row until there are 12 X’s with 5 d c at each end (102 sts). Turn, work pattern on these sts for 2 rows more, end at neck edge. Mark beg. of 2nd short row for center row of sleeve. Ch 22 for front neck edge, 1 d c in 4th st from hook, 1 d c in each of next 3 sts, continue pattern across ch and row below (122 sts). Work pattern even until there are same number of rows on other half of sleeve, end at neck edge. Beg. sleeve shaping as follows:
First row – Work pattern up to 2nd X from end of row below (105 sts), * 1 d c in each of next 2 sts, 1 h d c in next st, 1 s c in next st, 1 slip st in next d c *.
2nd row – Ch 1, turn, 1 slip st in first s c and in each of next 19 sts, l s c, 1 h d c, 2 d c over X, continue pattern across row.
3rd row – Work pattern up to 3rd X from end of row below (65 sts), repeat between *’s of first row. Fasten off. Join thread on back neck edge in 43rd st from other side (count each X as 4 sts), leaving 42 sts free for back of neck.
Ch 3, 4 d c over next X of row below and continue pattern to cuff edge. Work 3 more rows of pattern. Join separate strand at neck edge in last st of row below; ch 20 for front of neck and work pattern on ch, end 1 d c in each of last 5 sts. Work until same number of rows as on other sleeve up to first shaped row, end at cuff edge.
First row – Ch 1, turn, 1 slip st in 2nd d c of row below and in each of next 10 sts, l s c, l h d c, 2 d c over X, continue pattern across.
2nd row – Work pattern to 3rd X from end of row below, 2 d c, 1 h d c, 1 s c over X, 1 slip st in next d c.
3rd row – Ch 1, turn, 1 slip st in first s c and in each of next 19 sts, 1 s c, 1 h d c, 2 d c, continue pattern across row, ch 2 and join to turning ch at end of last row on first side. Fasten off. Join in last row on first side in 50th st from edge of front opening (the d c next to 6th X), ch 3, working toward front edge, work 4 d c over 6th X, continue pattern across front (working 2 sts in joining ch at center front) and across other front until 102 sts as on back. Work pattern even until 1 row less than on back to border.
Dec. row – Work pattern with ch 1 instead of ch 2 before last d c of each X (90 sts). Work 3 rows d c. Fasten off.
Cuffs
Join thread on right sleeve in end of first row, work 44 d c on edge. Work 2 rows d c. Fasten off. Work other cuff to correspond.
Collar
Ch 104. Beg. in 4th st from book, * repeat between f’s of first row of back, skipping 2 sts of ch, 1 d c in each of next 4 sts; repeat from v, end repeat between f’s, 1 d c in last st. Work 4 rows. Fasten off.
Finishing
Sew foundation ch of collar to neck edge. Sew seams. Work 1 row s c on edges of collar and neck opening. Steam. Lace front opening tog.
