Free Baby Bib Pattern: Crochet a Bib with Swans
REQUIRED MATERIALS
Lily SKYTONE Mercerized Crochet Cotton, No. 1
2 balls White and 1 ball Delft Blue (or other color)
Lily Six Strand Floss
1 skein each Red and Med. Green, and 3 skeins Yellow
24″ Narrow Ribbon
Crochet Hook Size 7
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Crocheting the Doily
(Wind Blue into 2 balls). In Blue, ch 179, 2 dc in 6th st, worked off together into a Cluster, a Cluster in next st, sc in next 4th st, * ch 3, (a Cluster in next st) twice, sc in next 4th st. Repeat from * across (29 shells).
Row 2 – Ch 7, a Cluster in 6th st, a Cluster in next st, turn, sc in 3-ch of next shell, (ch 3, 2 Clusters in same 3-ch, sc in next shell) across (29 shells). Use the right side of this Row as right side of doily.
Row 3 – Make a turning shell, sc in next shell, pulling White thru 2 loops of sc, drop Blue on front (wrong side). Work 27 White shells, join a 2d ball of Blue and make 1 shell.
Row 4 – 1 Blue shell, 4 White shells, working over Blue, 6 Blue shells, working over White, 2 White shells, 11 Blue shells, drop Blue, 4 White shells, drop White on back, 1 Blue shell. At ends, always carry thread up to next Row on wrong side.
Row 5 – Repeat Row 3, working over 2d Blue strand.
Row 6 – 1 Blue shell, 2 White, 5 Blue, 2 White, 10 Blue, 2 White, 4 Blue, drop Blue, 2 White and 1 Blue.
Repeat Row 5.
Row 8 – 5 Blue shells, 4 White, 8 Blue, 2 White, 10 Blue.
Repeat Row 5.
Row 10 – 29 Blue shells.
Repeat Row 5.
Row 12 – 1 Blue shell, drop Blue, 27 White and 1 Blue.
Repeat 26 times.
Cut White and make 2 Rows Blue. Fasten off.
Crocheting the Swan Portion
Body – In 6 strands Yellow Floss, ch 5, 4 dc in 1st st.
Row 2 – Ch 3, turn, dc in last dc, (2 dc in next) 3 times, dc in end ch.
Row 3 – Ch 3, turn, dc in last 2 dc, (2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next) twice, dc in 2 sts.
Row 4 – Ch 3, turn, dc in last 2 dc made into a Cluster, dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc, and 6 dc.
Row 5 – Ch 3, turn, dc in last dc, (dc in 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc) twice, dc in 2 dc for a Cluster.
Row 6 – Ch 4, turn, dc in last 3 dc for a Cluster, (dc in 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc) twice, 4 dc.
Row 7 – Ch 3, turn, dc in last dc, (dc in 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc) twice, dc in 4 dc for a Cluster.
Row 8 – Ch 4, turn, sk Cluster, dc in next 3 dc for a Cluster, dc in 2 dc for a Cluster, dc in 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc, 4 dc.
Row 9 – Ch 3. turn, dc in last 2 dc for a Cluster, 4 dc, 2 hdc, 1 sc and 1 sl st.
Tail – Ch 12, turn, sc in sl st, (ch 12, sc in next st) twice, ch 10, sc in next st, ch 8, sc in next. Fasten off.
Neck – Ch 30, sk last st, 3 sl sts, 3 sc, 3 hdc and 6 dc on ch, (2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next) 7 times. Fasten off.
Head – Ch 4, 10 dc in 1st st, sl st in 3-ch. Fasten off. Sew Swan in place. Make a Red French Knot for eye and 2 “V’s” for beak.
Lily – In Green Floss, make 4 Lazy Daisy sts for leaves, and a stem and 5 sts in Red for flower. Make 2 (1 1/2″ and 3″) from left end. Stretch and pin right-side-down in true shape. Steam and press dry thru a cloth.
Crocheting the Bib
Ch 137 in Blue and make 3 Rows as for Doily (22 Shells in each).
Row 4 – 1 Blue shell, 4 White, 12 Blue, 4 White and 1 Blue.
Repeat Row 5.
Row 6 – 1 Blue shell, 2 White, 4 Blue, 2 White, 6 Blue, 2 White and 5 blue.
Repeat Row 5.
Row 8 – Blue shells, 4 White and 9 Blue.
Repeat Row 5.
Row 10 – Blue shells, 6 White and 8 Blue.
Repeat Row 5.
Row 12 – 1 Blue shell, drop Blue, 20 White and 1 Blue.
Repeat 27 times.
The Shoulder
Row 40 – 1 Blue shell, 9 White and 1 Blue across half the width.
Repeat 9 times, then 2 Rows of Lt Blue shells. Fasten off.
Turn and join Blue to next shell on last long Row and make other shoulder.
Turn center points over and tack. Make Swan and 2 lilies.
Stretch, pin down, and steam and press.
Tack a 12″ ribbon to each neck corner.
