Adult Crochet Pattern - Two Piece Suit

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Spinnerin Town and Country “Dressy” – 1-oz. Skeins – 36 (38, 40, 42) sks Main Color (MC); 1 sk each of 2 Contrasting Colors (A and B)
Susan Bates Steel Crochet Hook No. 1
7 Rings for Buttons
1 Yard of Belting

NOTE(s)

This two piece suit for a lady can be crocheted in sizes 12, 14, 16 and 18. The instructions in this pattern are for size 12. Changes for sizes 14, 16 and 18 are in parentheses.

Gauge: 5 sts = 1 inch; 3 rows = 1 inch.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Pattern Stitch for Jacket

Row 1 – 1 dc in 4th ch from hook (the first 3-ch, counts as 1 dc), * 1 sc in each of next 2 ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 ch; repeat from * across ch. Ch 2, turn.

Row 2 – Sc in each of the first 2 dc, * dc in each of the next 2 sc, 1 sc in each of the next 2 dc; repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat Row 2 for pattern always working dc over sc and sc over dc. When ending with dc, make a ch-1 and turn; when ending with an sc, make a ch-2 and turn. Entire suit is worked with Double Yarn.

Jacket for Two Piece Suit

Back of Suit Jacket

With MC and double yarn, make a ch loosely to measure 17 (18, 19, 20)”. Work in pat. across ch until row measures 15 (16, 17, 18)”. Cut off remaining ch. Work in pat, dec. 1 st each end of every 3/4″ 6 (6, 6, 5) times or until row measures 12 1/2 (13 1/4, 14, 15)”. Work even until piece measures 5 (5, 5 1/2, 5 1/2)” from start.

Place a marker at end of last row for waistline.

Inc. 1 st each end of next row. Repeat this inc. every 3/4″ until row measures 15, (16, 17, 18)” or desired width across back from underarm to underarm. Work even until back measures 7 (7 1/2, 7 1/2, 8)” above marker. Arm-holes: Sl st across 1 (1, 1 1/4, 1 1/4)”, work to within same number of sts at end of row. Ch 1, turn and work back. Dec. 1 st each end of every row until row measures 12 1/2 (12 1/2, 13, 13 1/2)”. Work even until armholes measure 7 1/4 (7 1/2, 7 3/4, 7 3/4)”. Fasten off.

Left Front of Suit Jacket

With MC, make a ch loosely to measure 11 (12, 13, 14)”. Work in pat. across ch until row measures 9 1/2 (10, 10 1/2, 11)” or desired width across half of front (allow for button lap over).

Keeping 6 sts at center front edge in MC (attach small ball of MC at end of 1st colored row), work in striped pat. as follows:2 rows MC; 2 rows A; 2 rows MC; 1 row B. Repeat these 7 rows for colored pat.

Keeping front edge even, dec. at side edge same as for back to waistline. Place a marker at side edge for waistline. Inc. 1 st at side edge and repeat this inc. every 1/2″ until row measures 9 1/2 (10, 10 1/2, 11)” or desired width half way across fullest part of bust.

Work even until front measures same as back to underarm.

Armhole for Jacket

At arm edge bind off and dec. same as for back. Work even until armhole is same as back, working in striped pat. until 3 (3, 3 1/2, 3 1/2)” above armhole. Continue with MC to shoulder. Fasten off.

Buttonholes for Jacket

Place pins evenly spaced along edge of Left Front, as a guide in making 7 buttonholes. Work buttonhole as follows: Starting at center front edge, work 2 sts, ch 2, skip next 2 sts, work to end of row.

On next row, work 2 sts under the ch-2 space.

Right Front of Suit Jacket

Work to correspond with Left Front, working 7 buttonholes in center front edge, starting first buttonhole 1″ from beg: and last buttonhole about 3 1/2 (3 1/2, 4, 4)” above arm-hole.

Two Piece Suit Sleeve

Entire sleeve is worked with MC.

With double yarn, make a ch loosely to measure 7 (7 1/2, 7 1/2, 8)” or 1″ longer than desired wrist measurement. Work in pat. across ch until row is desired wrist measurement. Continue in pat. inc. 1 st each end of row every 1″ until row measures 11 1/4 (11 1/2, 12, 13)”.

Work even until sleeve measures 17 (17 1/2, 18, 18)” from start or desired length to underarm.

Shaping for the Sleeve

Sl st over 1st 3 sts, work to within 3 sts from end of row.

Turn and work back.

On next row, dec. 1 st each end.

Repeat this dec. every other row until armhole is 1 1/2″ less than back. Round out top of cap as follows: Do not make a ch-1 when turning. Slip st across first st of each of the next 4 rows. Fasten off.

Two Piece Suit Jacket Button

Make 7: With single strand, ch 3, join to first ch with a sl st to form a ring. Work 6 sc in ring. Work 2 sc in each st. Continue to work in sc inc. 6 sts at even intervals in each round until circle is just slightly larger than ring. Work 1 round even, then holding ring under work, dec. 6 sts at even intervals in each round until ring is completely covered. Fasten off.

Finishing the Jacket

Seam shoulders tog-for about 4 (4 1/4, 4 1/2, 5)” or desired shoulder measurement leaving remaining sts at front edge for a lapel. Seam underarms and sleeves. Set in sleeves. Using MC, on right side, work 1 row of sc around entire front, neck edge and sleeve edge. Work a buttonhole stitch around each buttonhole.

Sew buttons in place. Tack shoulder pads in place.

Two Piece Suit – Skirt Pattern

Work with Double Yarn.

Back of Crochet Skirt

With MC, make a ch loosely to measure 28 (28, 30, 30)”. Working through both lps of ch, work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook * 1 dc in next ch, 1 sc in next ch; repeat from * across ch until row will measure 25 (25, 27, 27)”. Cut off remaining ch. Ch. 2, turn.

Row 2 – Work an sc over a dc and a dc over an sc. Ch 1, turn. (When ending with a dc, make a ch-1 and turn, when ending with an sc, make a ch-2 and turn.)

Repeat Row 2 for pat.

Work even in pat. for 6 (6, 7, 7)”. Dec. (draw up a lp in each of the first 2 sts. Yo and draw through 3 lps) 1 st each end of next row.

Repeat this dec. every 1 1/2″ until row measures 17 (18, 19, 20)” or desired width across back hips (7″ below waistline). Work even until skirt measures 23 (24, 25, 25)” then continue to dec. each end every 1″ until row measures 12 1/2 (13 1/4, 14, 15)” or until desired waist measurement across back. Work even until skirt is 29 (29, 30, 30)” from start or desired length. Fasten off.

Front of Crocheted Skirt Pattern

Work to correspond with Back, dec. each end until row is desired hip measurement across front, then, continue to dec. same as for back to waist.

Finishing for Crochet Skirt

Leaving left side seam at waist open 7″, seam sides, leaving 4″ open at lower edge on each side for slits. On right side, work 1 row of sc around entire lower edge and slit and around waist and side opening. Cut belting to waist measurement, and sew in place. Sew in zipper.
