Crochet Hooks – a crochet hook (or crochet needle) is a type of needle with a hook at one end used to draw thread through knotted loops. To make crochet stitches, you only need to use one crochet hook.

Historically, crochet hooks were made from a whole range of material – bone, porcupine quill, celluloid, agate, and even ivory (to name a few). Today, hooks are usually made of wood, plastic, or aluminum.

We’ve provided links to where you can find a whole range of hooks for crocheting – from ones with decorative handles to more comfortable hooks with ergonomic handles. Feel free to browse around!

Crochet Thread – crochet thread is specially formulated thread for crafting decorative crochet items such as doilies or filet crochet.

Crochet thread is usually produced from cotton and has a denser pile and smaller diameter than ordinary yarn. It is not the same as crochet yarn – there are usually even different sizing scales for thread and yarn.

For crocheting with thread, you will usually use hooks that are made of steel and have smaller hook heads and shorter shanks.

Crochet thread comes in sizes from 3 to 100, although historically it came in much finer sizes, down to 200. Diameter is inversely proportional to number (the smaller the number, the larger the thread), so size 3 is nearly as thick as yarn and size 100 is as fine as sewing thread.

Crochet Yarns – yarn used for crocheting comes in a variety of textures, colors, and weights. It can be either wool, cotton, or acrylic.

Most crocheters find that yarn is easier to work with than crochet thread. If you don’t have a strong prefereance for one over the other, we would recommend that you start with yarn when you are learning to crochet.
