Steel Hook, No. 9

This easy crochet basket resembles a clothes basket in shape. It is 5 1/2 inches long, 3 1/2 inches wide, and about 2 inches high. A ribbon is run through the top edge of this and bowed at each end of the basket.
To stiffen basket, dip with sugar water made in the proportion of 1 spoonful of sugar to 2 spoonfuls of water and pull into shape over a form; a glass of anything the desired size will do.
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Ch 21.
1st Row – Using only 1 loop of ch, make 3 dc in 4th ch from hook, make 1 dc each in next 16 ch, 8 dc in last ch; now work down other side of ch, make 1 dc each in 16 ch and 4 dc in same stitch with 1 st 3dc, join.
2nd Row – Ch 3, 1 dc in joining, 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc each in next 20 dc, 2 dc each in next 4 stitches, 1 dc each in net 20 dc, 2 dc each in last 2 dc, join.
3rd Row – Ch 3, 1 dc in joining, 2 dc each in next 3 dc, 1 dc each in next 20 dc, 2 dc each in next 8 dc, 1 dc each in next 20 dc, 2 dc each in last 4 dc, join.
4th Row – Make 1 sc in each dc, join.
5th Row – Ch 4, 2 dc in 1st sc, * skip 2 sc, make a group of (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc in next sc. Repeat from * ending with 1 dc in joining of last row, join in 3rd ch.
6th Row – Ch 3, 1 dc in 1st space, ch 1, 2 dc in same place, * 1 group in next group. Repeat from * around edge, join in 3rd ch.
Repeat last row 4 times (or until basket is as deep as desired), making 2 ch in center of group in last row.
Finish by making 4 dc with 3 picots between in each group on edge.
To make a picot, ch 4, make 1 sc in 1st ch.
In the last row of the bottom of basket between the 2 sc that were skipped, make 4 dc all around edge. Finish this easy crochet basket pattern by making 1 sc in each dc using both loops at top of stitch.
If a larger size is desired, make another row of dc widening in 2 more dc on each side of each end.
