Tailored Cardigan - Child's Sweater
Free Vintage Crochet Pattern

This free tailored cardigan crochet pattern for a nice child's sweater was originally published in 1947 in the Sultana Baby Book, Vol S17.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Sultana Beautysheen, 12 Balls
Steel Crochet Hook, Size 8

NOTE(s)

This tailored cardigan is for a child of approximately 2 years.

Measurements — Chest 23 inches, length from lower edge to back of neck 11 1/2 inches, sleeves — width 8 inches.

Gauge: 10 sts = l inch, 14 rows = 2 inches

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

BACK

Ch 113.

Row 1 — right side — 1 dc in 4th st from hook and in each st to end; 111 dc, counting turning ch.

Row 2 — Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st, 1 sc in turning ch; 111 sc. Work all even rows as for row 2.

Row 3 - Ch 3, turn, skip 1 st, 1 dc in each of next 4 sts, * 1 dc (drawing up a long loop) around post of next st in dc row below (cable st); always skip sc in back of cable st — 1 dc in each of next 9 sts *; repeat between *'s, end last repeat, 5 dc; 11 cable sts.

Row 5 — Ch 3, turn, skip 1 st, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, * 1 cable in next st in dc row below, 1 dc in next st, 1 cable in next st in dc row below, 1 dc in each of next 7 sts; repeat between *'s, end last repeat 4 dc.

Row 7 — Same as row 3.

Row 9 — Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in 2nd and each remaining st; 111 dc.

Repeat last 8 rows until 54 rows from beginning, end with row 6.

Row 55 — Turn, slip st over 3 sts for underarm, ch 3, 1 dc in next st (2 sts decreased); work pat. to within 2 sts of end.

Work 1 row even. Dec. 1 st (by working off 2 sts as 1 st) each side on next row; 105 sts. Work even until 80 rows from beginning. Fasten off.

LEFT FRONT

Ch 64.

Rows 1 and 2 — Same as for back; 62 sts.

Row 3 — Ch 3, turn, skip 1 st, 1 dc in each of next 7 sts; repeat between *'s of row 3 of back, end last repeat, 3 dc.

Row 5 — Ch 3, turn, skip 1 st, 1 dc in each of next 6 sts, repeat between *'s of row 5 of back, end last repeat 2 dc.

Continue pat. until there are 54 rows.

Row 55 — Turn, slip st over 5 sts (for underarm), ch 3, 1 dc in next st (4 sts decreased); finish row in pat. Continue pat., decreasing 1 st at armhole edge every row twice; 56 sts.

Work even until 71 rows from beginning.

Row 72 — Turn; slip st over 18 sts for neck edge, ch 1, 1 sc in each st. Dec. 1 st at neck edge every row 6 times. Work 32 sts even until 81 rows from beginning. Fasten off.

RIGHT FRONT

Ch 64.

Rows 1 and 2 — Same as for left front.

Row 3 — Ch 3, turn, skip 1 st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, repeat between *'s of row 3 of back, end last repeat 8 dc.

Continue pat. working same number of rows as on left front to underarm.

Shape armhole and neck at opposite sides.

Finish to correspond to left front.

SLEEVES

Row 1 — Ch 49, 1 sc in 2nd st from hook and in each st to end; 48 sc.

Row 2 — Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st.

Repeat last row 5 times.

First Pat. Row — Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in same st as turning ch, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, * 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts; repeat from * to end; 81 sts.

Row 2 — Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st.

Continue pat. as for back until there are 62 pat. rows.

Row 63 — Turn, slip st over first 4 sts, ch 3, 1 dc in next st, work pat. to within 3 sts of end, (3 sts decreased at each side); 75 sts. Dec. 1 st each side every row 6 times; 3 sts at each side every row 4 times. Fasten off.

FINISHING

Sew seams. Sew in sleeves with seams at center underarm.

BORDER

Beginning at lower edge of right front, work 96 sc to neck edge, 3 sc in corner st, 18 sc across front neck, 13 sc to shoulder seam, 41 sc across back of neck; finish left side to correspond. Ch 1, turn at end of every row.

Row 2 — Work 97 sc to corner, 3 sc in corner st, 18 sc, dec. 1 st in next 2 sts at inside corner, work sc to shoulder seam, dec. 1 st; finish right side to correspond.

Row 3 — Work 14 sc, * ch 4, skip 4 sts for buttonhole, 16 sc; repeat from * 3 times, ch 4, skip 4, 3 sc in corner st (5 buttonholes); finish row decreasing at inside corners and inc. at outside corner as in row 2.

Rows 4 and 5 — Work sc increasing and decreasing at corners as in row 2. Fasten off. Steam lightly.
