Crochet Afghan Pattern: Sun Porch Afghan
REQUIRED MATERIALS
BEAR BRAND or BUCILLA Zephyr Germantown:11 balls each of Pumpkin No. 453 and Green No. 983; 8 balls Brown No. 540, 7 balls each of Rust No. 357 and Green No. 986, 6 balls Green No. 987 1 BUCILLA Celluloid Crochet Hook No. 4

Gauge: 9 sts = 2 inches; 5 rows = 1 inch

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Squares
With brown No. 540, ch 37, 36 s c on chain.
2nd Row - Ch 1, turn, 1 s c in each st, taking up both threads of st below; repeat 2nd row until there are 10 rows (5 ridges) from beginning; break off yarn and draw end through loop on hook.
Change to rust No. 357 and work 10 rows, then 21 rows (10 1/2 ridges) with pumpkin No. 453; break off and darn in all ends.
Make 24 squares in this color combination.
With green No. 987, ch 37, 36 s c on chain; work 9 more rows with this color, then 10 rows of green No, 986 and 21 rows of green No. 983.
Make 24 squares in this green color combination.
Arrange squares as shown in illustration and sew them together; work all seams from same side and take care to have them as elastic as the crocheted sts.
Border
Every row in border is worked from the right side. With brown No. 540, make 1 s c in each st, or row, around the entire robe, with 3 s c in the st at corners; fasten off.
2nd Round - With pumpkin No. 453, work a shell of 3 d c in the st just before a corner, skip the corner st, a shell of 3 d c in next st, skip 2 sts, a shell in next st, * skip 3 sts, a shell in next st; repeat from * around, but occasionally skip only2 sts (in about every 10th shell); be careful to make all 4 corners alike.
3rd Round - With rust No. 357, make a shell of 3 d c in each space between shells in row below, 6 d c in every corner space,
4th Round - With green 983, make 1 s c in center st of the 3 brown s c skipped between the pumpkin shells of 2nd row, * ch 5, 1 s c in center st of the brown s c skipped before next pumpkin shell; repeat from * around.
5th Round - With green 986, make 1 s c under any ch 5 in last row, * ch 5, 1 s c under next ch 5; repeat from * around, but ch 6 (instead of 5) at each corner.
Edging
Using brown 540, insert hook under the green ch 6 at one corner, insert it also in 2nd d c of rust corner shell (in 3rd row) and make 1 s c, ch 3, 1 d c in top of s c just made; insert hook under same corner loop and also in 5th d c of same rust corner shell in 3rd round, make 1 s c, * ch 3, 1 d c in top of s c just made; inserting hook under next green loop and also in 2nd d c of rust shell right behind green loop, make 1 s c; repeat from * to corner; make second corner the same as first; continue edging in this way around entire robe and fasten off.
