How to Crochet a Placemat

This free striped placemat crochet pattern was originally published in the 1940s in the American Thread Company's Puritan Crochet Book.



Follow the easy step-by-step instructions of this crochet pattern to make a set of crochet place-mats for your kitchen table. There is absolutely no charge for personal use of this easy crochet home decor pattern.

Striped Placemat - Free Home Decor Crochet Pattern

REQUIRED MATERIALS

AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY The Famous "PURITAN" STAR SPANGLED CROCHET COTTON, Article 40, 2 Balls Green Spangle, 3 Balls Silver Spangle for each mat or Colors of Your Choice OR The Famous "PURITAN" CROCHET COTTON, Article 40, 2 Balls Forest Green, 2 Balls White or Colors of Your Choice for Each Mat
Steel Crochet Hook No. 7 or No. 8

NOTE(s)

Each striped placemat measures about 11 inches x 17 1/2 inches

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

With Green Spangle or Forest Green ch 4, 3 d c in 4th st from hook, ch 3, turn.

2nd Row - 2 d c in same space, skip 1 d c, sl st in next d c, ch 3, 2 d c in same space with sl st (shell), ch 3, turn. 3rd Row. 2 d c in same space, sl st in ch 3 of same shell, ch 3, 2 d c in same space, sl st in ch 3 of next shell, ch 3, 2 d c in same space, ch 3, turn.

Repeat the 3rd row having 1 more shell in each row until there are 15 shells in row. The straight sides should now measure about 4 inches, cut thread.

Next Row - Attach Silver Spangle or White and continue in same manner until there are 31 shells in row, drop thread (when changing color always complete last half of last st worked with next color).

The straight sides should now measure 8 inches.

Next Row - Attach Green Spangle or Forest Green and working in same manner work 2 rows Green, 4 rows Silver Spangle or White, 2 rows Green (39 shells in last row), ch 3, turn.

40th Row - Same as last row but ending with a sl st in ch 3 loop of last shell (39 shells), turn.

41st Row - Sl st to ch 3 of 1st shell (this forms opposite corner), ch 3, 2 d c in same space, * sl st in ch 3 of next shell, ch 3, 2 d c in same space, repeat from * across row (39 shells), drop thread.

42nd Row - With Silver Spangle or White ch 3, 2 d c in same space, sl st in ch 3 of same shell, * ch 3, 2 d c in same space, sl st in ch 3 of next shell, repeat from * across row, turn. There are 39 shells in each row. When changing color on straight sides always sl st to the ch 3 before changing color.

43rd Row - Sl st to ch 3 of 1st shell, ch 3, 2 d c in same space, * sl st in ch 3 of next shell, ch 3, 2 d c in same space, repeat from * across row, ch 3, turn.

Repeat the last 2 rows always having 39 shells in each row, working 2 more rows Silver Spangle or White, 2 rows Green, 9 rows Silver Spangle or White, 2 rows Green, 4 rows Silver Spangle or White, 2 rows Green, ch 1 to turn at end of last row.

65th Row - Sl st to ch 3 at beginning of row and end with sl st in ch 3 of last shell (corner), turn (38 shells).

66th Row - Same as last row but having 1 less shell in row, drop Green.

Repeat the last row having 1 shell less in each row, working next 4 rows in Silver Spangle or White, 2 rows Green, cut Green, 16 rows Silver Spangle or White (15 shells left), cut thread. Attach Green and continue in same manner until 2 shells remain, ch 1, turn.

Next Row - Sl st to ch 3 of next shell, ch 3, thread over hook, insert in same space, pull through and work off 2 loops, thread over hook, insert in next d c of next shell, pull through and work off 2 loops, thread over hook, insert in next d c of same shell, pull through, thread over and work off 2 loops, thread over, insert in ch 3 loop, thread over and work off 2 loops, thread over and work off all loops at one time, cut thread.

Edge for Striped Placemat

With Green work a row of shells around entire mat, join, cut thread.

Work 3 more mats in same manner to complete the set.
