Sparkling Sailor Hat Pattern

This free sparkling sailor hat pattern was originally published by Coats and Clark's in 1955 in Hats & Bags, Book No. 310.



Follow the easy step-by-step instructions of this vintage hat pattern to crochet this classic sparkling sailor hat. There is absolutely no charge for personal use of this crocheted hat pattern.

Sparkling Sailor Hat Pattern

Vintage Crocheted Sailor Hat

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Coats & Clark's O.N.T "Speed-Cro-Sheen" Mercerized Cotton, Art. C.44: 6 balls of No. 76-A Aqua; and

J & P Coats "Knit-Cro-Sheen" Metallic, Art A. 64: 6 balls of No. M.76 Robinette.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook: No. 2/0 (double zero)
1/4 yard felt for lining bag
1 1/2 yards of aqua gros-grain ribbon, 1 inch wide
5 packages of Walco gold drop beads, Style No. 7368
5 packages of oblong gold beads, Style No. 7336
5 packages of small gold beads, Style No. 7303
1 yard of cable cord
1 cuff link

NOTE(S)

Use one strand each of "Speed-Cro-Sheen" and "Knit-Cro-Sheen" Metallic together throughout.

Gauge: 5 sc make 1 inch; 5 rnds or rows make 1 inch.

There is also a pattern for a matching bag. The 'required materials' are what is required to make BOTH the hat and the matching bag.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

THE HAT

Starting at center, ch 2.

1st Rnd - 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.

2nd Rnd - 2 sc in each sc around.

3rd Rnd - * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc (1 sc increased). Repeat from * around.

4th Rnd - Sc in each sc, increasing 6 sc evenly around.

Repeat 4th rnd until piece measures 6 inches in diameter. There should be 90 sc on last rnd.

Next Rnd - Sc in each sc, increasing 9 sc evenly around. Repeat last rnd 5 more times. Piece should measure 8 1/2 inches in diameter. Work without increasing for 2 more rnds.

Following Rnd - Sc in each sc, decreasing 9 sc evenly around - to dec 1 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc. Repeat last rnd 5 more times.

THE BAND

1st Rnd - Picking up front loop only, sc in each sc around.

2nd and 3rd Rnd - Working through both loops, sc in each sc around. At end of 3rd rnd, join and break off. Sew ribbon around band. Cut remaining ribbon in half for bow and cut ends on bias. Sew pieces neatly together for reinforcing and sew to hat. Sew beads around band and on bow.
