Free Crochet Pattern Set for a
Placemat, Runner, and Glass Jacket

This free crochet pattern for a placemat and runner was originally published in the 1920s in Universal Publishing's Smart Crochet.



Follow the easy step-by-step instructions of this crochet pattern to make a set of crochet place-mats and a runner for your kitchen table. There is absolutely no charge for personal use of this easy crochet pattern.

Crochet Some Placemats

Placemat, Runner, and Glass Jacket - Crochet Pattern

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Dritz Luxury Belastraw Art No. 110, 3 Tubes will make 2 Place Mats about 11" x 17" and 2 Glass Jackets - 2 Tubes will make 1 Runner 11" x 27"
Steel Crochet Hook No. 2

NOTE(s)

Gauge: 2 Cross Sts = About 1 1/8".

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Place Mat - Crochet Pattern

Starting at long edge ch 90 to measure about 17 1/2".

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across (89sc). Ch 2, turn.

Row 2: Skip 1st sc, dc in back lp of next sc, ch 4, dc in top of last dc, * yo twice, insert hook in back lp of next sc and pull lp through (4 lps on hook), yo and draw through 2 lps, yo, skip 1 sc, insert hook in back lp of next sc and pull lp through (5 lps on hook), (yo and draw through 2 lps) 4 times; ch 1, dc in center of cross. Repeat from * across (30 cross sts). Ch 1, turn.

Row 3: Sc in front lp of each dc and each ch st across (89) sc. Ch 2, turn.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3, alternately 9 more times. Ch 1, turn and work sc evenly all around making 3 sc at each corner, being careful to keep work flat. End off.

Block to given measurements and if desired, coat with plastic spray.

Runner - Crochet Pattern

Starting at long edge ch 144 to measure about 27 1/2".

Row 1: Work same as Row 1 of Place Mat (143 sc).

Row 2: Work same as Row 2 of Place Mat (48 cross sts).

Row 3: Work same as Row 3 of Place Mat (143 sc).

Complete same as Place Mat.

Glass Jacket - Crochet Pattern

Starting at center of bottom ch 4. Join with sl st to form ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, 7 sc in ring. Mark last st of every rnd to insure proper shaping.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc (14 sc).

Rnd 3: * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * around (21 sc).

Rnds 4 thru 6: Sc in each sc increasing 7 sc evenly around (42 sc at end of Rnd 6).

Rnd 7: Sl st loosely in back lp of each sc.

Side of Glass Jacket

Rnd 1: Sc in same place as each sl st (behind the sl sts) - 42 sc. Join with sl st in back lp of 1st sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, sc in back lp of each sc around (42 sc). Join.

Rnd 3: Work same as Row 2 of Place Mat (14 cross sts). Join with sl st in top dc of 1st cross st.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, sc in back lp of each dc and each ch st around (42 sc). Join with sl st in back lp of 1st sc.

Rnds 5 and 6: Repeat Rnds 3 and 4.

Rnd 7: Sc in back lp of each sc. Join and end off.
