42 inches of Hat Wire

Gauge: 9 shells = 4 ins, 4 rows = 1 inch, 9 sc = 1 inch, 11 rows = 1 inch

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Back of Pert Bonnet

Ch 26 tightly.

Pattern for Pert Bonnet

Row 1 — right side — 1 sc in 2nd st from hook, * work shell as follows: ch 2, yo, draw up a loop in next st, yo, through 2 loops, draw up a loop in next st, yo, through 2 loops, yo, through all loops on hook (eye of shell), ch 2, this completes shell; 2 sc in next st; repeat from *, end last repeat with 1 sc in last st; 8 shells.

Row 2 — Ch 4, turn, 4 dc in eye of each shell, end 1 tr in last sc.

Row 3 — Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in 2nd st, ch 2, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, * work shell as in row 1 over next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts *; repeat between *'s working last shell over last dc and turning ch, end with eye of shell; 7 shells and 1 half shell at each side.

Row 4 — Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in eye of the half shell, 4 dc in eye of each shell, end with 2 dc in dc of last half shell.

Row 5 — Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first dc, * work shell over next2 sts, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts; repeat from *, end last repeat with 1 sc in top of turning ch.

Repeat last 4 rows for pat.

Work until 16 rows from beginning. Fasten off.

Crown of Pert Bonnet

Join at beginning of first row of back, working from right side, on side of back, 1 sc in first row, * 1 shell and 2 sc under tr (end of 2nd row), 1 shell and 2 sc under turning ch of next row, 1 shell and 1 sc under last dc of next row, 1 sc in sc of next row; repeat from * 3 times, end last repeat with 1 sc in top of last dc of last row; 12 shells; continue pat. across back, end with 1 sc over turning ch, 1 sc and shell under same turning ch, 2 sc and shell in next row; finish to correspond to other side, end with sc in sc of first row; 32 shells.

Work pat. even until 22 rows from beginning of crown, end with row 2 of pat.

Row 23 — Ch 1, turn, skip tr, 1 sc in each of next 56 dc, * draw up a loop in each of next 2 sts, work off as 1 sc, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts; repeat from * 3 times, 1 sc in each of next 56 dc; 124 sc.

Row 24 — Edging around face—Working in front loop of each st, work as for pat. row 5; 31 shells. Fasten off.

Brim of Pert Bonnet

Upper Section of Pert Bonnet

Working from same side as edging, work in loops left free in sc row of crown.

Row 1 — Leaving 50 loops free on each side, work 1 sc in each of 24 center loops.

Row 2 — Inc. Row — Slip st in each of next 2 loops on crown, ch 1, turn; working in both loops of sts in previous row, 1 sc in each of next 8 sts, 2 sc in each of next 5 sts, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in each of next 5 sts, 1 sc in each of next 6 sts, 1 sc in each of next 2 loops on crown; 38 sc.

Row 3 — Slip st in each of next 2 loops on crown, ch 1, turn; 1 sc in each st, 1 sc in each of 2 loops on crown; 42 sc.

Rows 4, 5 and 6 — Same as row 3, having 4 more sts in each row; 54 sc.

Rows 7 and 8 — Work as for row 3 working 4 more sts on crown at each side in each row; 70 sts.

Row 9 — Inc. Row — Slip st in each of next 6 loops on crown, ch 1, turn; 1 sc in each of next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st, * 1 sc in each of next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st; repeat from * 12 times, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 6 loops on crown; 97 sc.

Rows 10 and 11 — Work as for row 3 working 6 more sts on crown at each side in each row; 121 sc.

Row 12 — Inc. Row — Slip st in each of next 6 loops, ch 1, turn; 1 sc in each of next 10 sts, 2 sc in next st, * 1 sc in each of next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st; repeat from * 15 times, 1 sc in each of next 4 sts, 1 sc in each of next 6 loops on crown; 150 sc.

Rows 13, 14, 15 and 16 — Same as row 3; 166 sc.

Row 17 — Fold back 1/2 in. of each side of a 21-in. wire. Working over wire, 2 sc in first st, * draw up a loop in next st, yo, through 1 loop, draw up a loop through same st, yo, through all loops on hook *; repeat between *'s to within 1 st of end, 2 sc in last st; 168 sts. Sew ends of wire firmly to work.

Row 18 — Ch 1, turn, working in front loop of sts, 1 sc in each st to end; 168 sc; continue on sides of crown and back for neckband; working 2 sc in turning ch of 22nd row of crown, 40 sc more to back, 20 sc across back, 42 sc on other side of crown, join with slip st in first sc of this row.

Row 19 — Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each of 104 sc of neckband, 1 sc in first sc of brim, * work shell over next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts; repeat from * to end of brim, end last repeat with 1 sc, slip st to first sc of neckband. Fasten off.

Lower Section of Pert Bonnet

With back of bonnet toward you, work in loops left free in row 17 of the upper section.

Row 1 — Leaving 75 loops free on each side, work 1 sc in each of 18 center loops.

Row 2 — Slip st in each of next 5 loops, ch 1, turn; 1 sc in each of next 23 sts, 1 sc in each of next 5 loops; 28 sc.

Continue working 5 more sts on each side in each of next 6 rows and 10 sts more on each side in each of next 4 rows; 168 sc.

Row 13 — Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each sc.

Row 14 — Ch 1, turn, work over wire same as on row 17 of upper section; 170 sts.

Row 15 — Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st.

Row 16 — Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each of 2 sts, * 1 shell over next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts; repeat from * to end.

Fasten off. Trim as illustrated.
