Ch 1, work 1 sc in 2 back loops of each st, leaving front loops free for ridge at edge of sole; join in first sc. Mark last st for center back.
Row 2 — Ch 2, 1 hdc in each st; do not join.
Row 3 — Ch 2, turn, always working through 2 back loops, 39 hdc, work next 2 hdc off as 1 st, 39 hdc.
