Frock Dress - Young Girl's Frock

This free girl's frock dress crochet pattern was originally published in 1947 in the Sultana Baby Book, Volume S17.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Sultana Beautysheen, 12 Balls
Steel Crochet Hook, Size 7

NOTE(s)

This frock dress size is for a young girl, 2 years of age.

For her very first social gathering make this beguiling dress. The skirt is done in simple double crochet - the bodice in a combination of dainty mesh and double crochet.

Measurements — Chest 21-22 inches, width at shoulders 9 1/2 inches, length from lower edge to underarm 11 1/2 inches.

Gauge: 10 dc = 1 inch, 19 rows = 4 inches

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

FRONT

Skirt

Ch 163 for lower edge of skirt.

Row 1 — right side — 1 dc in 4th and each remaining st to end; 161 dc. Always count turning ch 3 as 1 dc.

Row 2 — Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in 2nd and in each of next 2 dc, * ch 1, skip 1, 1 dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1, 1 dc in each of next 7 dc *; repeat between *'s, end last repeat 1 dc in each of 3 sts, 1 dc in top of turning ch.

Row 3 — Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in 2nd and in each of next 2 dc, * ch 3, slip st in next dc, ch 3, 1 dc in each of 7 dc *; repeat between *'s, end last repeat 3 dc, 1 dc in top of turning ch.

Row 4 — Ch 3, turn, work 3 dc, * 1 dc in sp under 3 ch, ch 1,1 dc in next sp, 1 dc in each of 7 dc *; repeat between *'s, end last repeat 1 dc in sp, 1 dc in each of 3 dc, 1 dc in top of turning ch.

Row 5 — Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in 2nd and each remaining dc and sp; 161 dc.

Row 6 — Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in 2nd and in each of next 7 sts, repeat between *'s of row 2, end 9 dc.

Row 7 — Ch 3, turn, work 8 dc, repeat between *'s of row 3, end 9 dc.

Row 8 — Ch 3, turn, work 8 dc, repeat between *'s of row 4, end 1 dc in sp, 9 dc.

Row 9 — Same as row 5.

Repeat last 8 rows until 10 1/2 ins. from beginning, or 1 in. less than desired length to underarm, end with dc row.

YOKE

Ch 4, turn, 1 dc in 3rd dc, * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 dc in next st; repeat from * to end.

Dec. Row — right side — Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first dc, * skip 1 ch, 1 sc in next dc, 1 sc in next sp, skip 1 dc, 1 sc in next sp, 1 sc in next dc; repeat from *, end skip 1 ch, 1 sc in dc, skip 1 ch, 1 sc in next ch st; 107 sc.

Beading

Row 1 — Ch 4, turn, 1 tr in 2nd sc, * ch 1, skip 1 sc, 1 tr in each of next 2 sts; repeat from * to end.

Row 2 — Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each tr and sp, end 1 sc in top of turning ch; 107 sts.

Armholes

Ch 1, turn, slip st over first 6 sc for underarm, 1 sc in next st, ch 4, skip 1 st, 1 dc in next st, * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 dc in next st; repeat from * to within 6 sts of end. Ch 3, turn, * 1 dc in sp, 1 dc in dc, repeat from *, end 1 dc in 3rd st of turning ch; 95 dc. Ch 4, turn, 1 dc in 3rd dc, * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 dc in next st; repeat from * to end; 47 sp. Repeat last2 rows until there are 16 rows above underarm, end with dc row.

Neck and Shoulder Shaping

Ch 4, turn, work until 14 sp; 29 sts, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc. Ch 3, turn, work 1 row dc; 31 sts. Repeat last 2 rows until 7 short rows, ending openwork rows with 3 dc at neck edge.

Fasten off.

Working from wrong side, skip 33 sts on last long row for front neck edge; with loop on hook, work 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 dc in next st; repeat from * to end. Finish to correspond to other shoulder.

BACK

Skirt

Work same as front until 2 rows above underarm; 95 dc.

Left Half of Back

Next row, ch 4, turn, work until 23 spaces; 47 sts. Turn. Continue as for front on these sts until 16 rows above underarm, end with dc row. Fasten off.

Right Half of Back

Working from wrong side, skip center st of last long row of back. With loop on hook, 1 dc in next st, * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 dc in next st; repeat from * to end. Finish to correspond to left side.

SLEEVES

Cuff

Ch 63, work 62 sc on ch.

Beading

Work row 1 and row 2 of beading as for front yoke; 62 sc.

Inc. Row — Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in each of 2nd and 3rd sts, * ch 1, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts; repeat from *, end last repeat 3 dc; 91 sts. Ch 3, 1 dc in 2nd and in each remaining dc and ch st, end 1 dc in turning ch; 91 dc. Repeat 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th row of skirt pat.

Dec. Row — Ch 3, turn, skip first dc, * yo, draw up a loop in next st, yo and through 2 loops, yo, draw up loop in next st, yo, through 2 loops, yo, through 3 loops (1 st decreased) *; repeat between *'s once, continue with care to keep pat., to within 4 sts of end (turning ch counts as 1 dc), repeat between *'s twice. Repeat dec. of 2 sts at beginning and end of each of next 11 rows, with care to keep pat.; 43 sts. Fasten off.

FINISHING

Sew seams. Sew in sleeves with seam at center underarm, holding in fulness at top. Working from right side, work 1 row sc on right edge of opening, keeping work flat. Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each sc. Fasten off.

Beginning at lower left edge of opening, work sc to neck edge, working 4 buttonloops equal distances apart; 1 sc in corner st at neck edge. Ch 3, slip st in first st (a picot), 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, continue picot edging around neck, spacing picots evenly and holding in corners by skipping 1 st. Steam lightly. Trim with ribbon as illustrated.
