Crochet a Fold Away Hat

Fold Away Cloche - Free Crochet Hat Pattern

REQUIRED MATERIALS

AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY The Famous "PURITAN" STAR SPANGLED CROCHET COTTON, Article 40, 5 Balls Cinnamon Spangle or Color of Your Choice OR The Famous "PURITAN" CROCHET COTTON, Article 40, 3 Balls Brown or Color of Your Choice
1 Yard Velvet Tubing
Steel Crochet Hook No. 1

NOTE(s)

This crochet hat is worked with a double strand of thread throughout.

Gauge: 11 s c = 2 inches.

There is a matching fold away bag for this fold away hat.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Ch 7, s c in 3rd st from hook, 1 s c in each of the next3 sts of ch, 3 s c in end st, working around opposite sideof starting ch, 1 s c in each of the next 4 sts, 3 s c innext st. Do not join this or following rounds. Place amarker at the beginning of each round.

2nd Round - * 1 s c in each of the next 4 s c, 2 s c ineach of the next 3 s c, repeat from * once.

3rd Round - ** 1 s c in each of the next 4 s c, * 2 s c innext s c, s c in next s c, repeat from * twice, repeatfrom ** once.

4th Round - ** 1 s c in each of the next 7 s c, * 2 s c in next s c, s c in next s c, repeat from * twice, repeat from ** once.

5th Round - ** 1 s c in each of the next 7 s c, * 2 s c in next s c, 1 s c in each of the next 2 s c, repeat from * twice, repeat from ** once.

6th Round - ** 1 s c in each of the next 10 s c, * 2 s c in next s c. 1 s c in each of the next 2 s c, repeat from * twice, repeat from ** once.

7th to 18th Rounds - 1 s c in each s c on sides increasing 3 s c evenly spaced around each end, not directly over increases of previous round (116 s c). Work even until cloche measures 5 3/4 inches from center of beginning chain across oval end to edge, join, cut thread.

Band for Fold Away Cloche

Ch 117, s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each remaining st of ch (116 s c), ch 1, turn.

2nd Row - 1 s c in each s c to within last 4 sts from end (112 s c), ch 1, turn.

3rd through 22nd Rows - Repeat 2nd row, having 4 sts less in each row (32 sts remain).

Work a row of s c around entire band, join, cut thread.

Finishing for Fold Away Cloche

Fold cloche in half so that oval shape will be at each side. Place marker at center between each oval for front and back.

Fold band in half, pin center of band to marker and sew band to cloche having both open ends at center back.

Braid for Fold Away Cloche

(Make 3) Ch 200, sl st in 2nd st from hook, 1 sl st in each remaining st of ch. Make a braid and sew to top of band as illustrated.

Tie velvet tubing in bow and sew to back as illustrated.
