NOTE(s)

This 'first outing' set is for a baby 6 months to 1 year.

Measurements — chest 20 inches, length from lower edge to underarm 6 inches, sleeves — width 7 1/2 inches.

Gauge: 7 sts = l inch, 6 rows = l inch

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

BABY SACQUE

BACK

With main color, ch 79;

Row 1 — right side — Draw up a loop in each of 3rd and 4th st from hook, yo, through 2 loops, yo, through 2 loops, * draw up a loop in same st as last loop, draw up a loop in next st, yo, through 2 loops, yo, through 2 loops *; repeat between *'s to within 1 st of end, 1 hdc in last st; 76 sts.

Row 2 — Ch 2, turn, draw up a loop in hdc, draw up a loop in next st, work off as before; repeat between *'s of first row, 1 hdc in same st as last loop; 76 sts.

Repeat 2nd row for pat. until 1 3/4 ins. from beginning.

First Dec. Row — Ch 2, turn, skip hdc, draw up a loop in each of next 2 sts, work off as before, work pat. to within 1 st of end, 1 hdc in last st; 74 sts.

Repeat decreases every 1 in. twice; 70 sts.

Work even until 5 ins. from beginning, end on wrong side.

SLEEVES

Ch 44 for right sleeve, work 41 sts on ch as for row 1, draw up a loop in same st as last loop and a loop in first st on back, work off as before, continue pat. across back, omitting hdc at end of row, drop loop from hook, join separate strand in same st as last loop, ch 43, fasten off; take up dropped loop, draw up a loop in same st as last loop and a loop in first st of ch, work off as before, continue pat. on ch for 2nd sleeve to within 1 st of end, 1 hdc in last st; 154 sts. Work even until there are 14 rows on sleeves, end on wrong side.

Neck Shaping

Next Row — right side — Ch 2, turn, work pat. for 56 sts only for right sleeve, 1 hdc in same st as last loop; 57 sts. Ch 2, turn; work pat. even on these sts until there are 17 short rows, end at neck edge. Ch 18 for front neck edge, turn, work pat. as for row 1, finish row; 73 sts. Work even on these sts for 13 rows more, end at front edge.

RIGHT FRONT

Turn, work pat. for 30 sts only, 1 hdc in same st as last loop. Work even for about 1% ins., end at underarm edge.

First Inc. Row — Ch 3, turn, draw up loop through 3rd st from hook, 1 loop through hdc, work off as before, finish row; 32 sts. Repeat inc. rivery 1 in. twice.

Work even until same length as back below underarm. Fasten off.

LEFT SLEEVE AND FRONT

Working from right side, skip 40 sts for back of neck, with loop on hook, draw up a loop in each of next 2 sts, work off as before, finish row; 57 sts. Work 17 more rows, end at neck edge, omitting last hdc. Drop loop from hook; join separate strand in same st as last loop, ch 17, fasten off. Continue pat. to within 1 st of end of ch, 1 hdc in last st; 73 sts. Finish to correspond to right front. Sew seams.

BORDER

Working from right side and beginning at underarm seam with contrasting color, work pat. around all edges of sacque, keeping edges flat; join with slip st.

Round 2 — Ch 2, turn, work to corner, * inc. 1 st by working again in same 2 sp as last st *, work next st; repeat between *'s once (2 sts increased), finish row, increasing 2 sts on each outside corner and working even around neck edge; join.

Round 3 — Ch 2, turn, work pat., increasing at 4 outside corners as before and decreasing at 4 inside corners of neck edge as follows: work to within 1 st of corner, draw up a loop in same st as last loop and in each of next 3 sts, yo, through 3 loops, yo, through 3 loops. Repeat last round 4 times. Fasten off.

Cuffs

Working first round from right side, with contrasting color, work 7 rounds pat. on end of each sleeve. Fasten off. Steam lightly. Sew on buttons. Use pat. for buttonholes.

BABY CAP

With main color, ch 21 for back of neck.

Work same as for back of sacque for 6 rows; 18 sts.

First Inc. Row — Ch 3, turn, draw up a loop in 3rd st from hook, 1 loop in hdc, work off as before, finish row, increasing 1 st in last st, 1 hdc in same st.

Repeat inc. each side every 4th row 4 times; 28 sts.

Work 3 rows even.

Ch 33, turn, work pat. on ch, finish row, omitting last hdc, drop loop from hook. Join separate strand in same st as last loop, ch 32, fasten off. Continue pat. to within 1 st of end, 1 hdc in last st; 90 sts.

Work even for 4 1/2 ins., end on wrong side. Fasten off.

Join contrasting color, work 7 rows more for front border; continue on side edge, working 1 pat. at end of every 2nd row for neck band, continue around edges of back, keeping work flat; work other side of neck band, same as first side, 1 hdc in same st as last loop. Ch 2, turn, work 1 row even; end at left front edge. Fasten off. Steam lightly.

Sew 4 small buttons to lower edge of back, lapping sides of cap over back to required size. Trim as illustrated.
