Free Diagonal Bedspread Crochet Pattern
Pattern for a Crocheted Bedspread

This free crochet pattern for a diagonal bedspread was originally published in the 1920s in Universal Publishing's Smart Crochet.

Diagonal Bedspread - Free Crochet Pattern

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Lily Antique Bedspread Cotton, Art. 59, 700 yd. Skeins
Single Bed Size - 13 Skeins
Double Bed Size - 16 Skeins
Susan Bates Steel Crochet Hook No. 10

NOTE(s)

Gauge for Diagonal Bedspread - Each Block measures approx. 11" square. For single size spread about 66" x 99" without fringe, make 6 x 9 blocks; for double size spread 88" x 99", make 8 x 9 blocks.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Diagonal Bedspread - Block

Rnd 1: Ch 8 (to count as a dc and ch-5), dc in 1st ch, (ch 5, dc in same ch 1 twice, ch 5, join with sl st to 3rd ch of ch-8.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, * 5 dc in next sp; in next dc make dc, ch 5 and dc. Repeat from * around, ending 5 dc in last sp, dc in joining, ch 2, dc in top of ch-3.

Rnd 3: Ch 5, turn, * dc in each of 7 dc, ch 2: in 3rd ch of ch-5 make dc. ch 5 and dc; ch 2. Repeat from * around, ending dc in last 7 dc, ch 2, dc in joining, ch 2, dc in 3rd ch of ch-5.

Rnd 4: Ch 3, turn, (2 dc in next sp. dc in next dc) twice, * ch 5, skip next 5 dc, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc; in corner sp make 3 dc, ch 5 and 3 dc; dc in next dc, 2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc. Repeat from * around, ending 3 dc in last corner, ch 2, dc in top of ch-3.

Rnd 5: Ch 5, turn, * dc in each of next 7 dc, ch 3, sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 3, dc in next 7 dc, ch 2; in 3rd ch of corner ch-5 make dc, ch 5 and dc; ch 2. Repeat from * around ending same as rnd 3.

Rnd 6: Ch 3, turn. (2 dc in next sp, do in next dc) twice, * ch 5, skip next 5 dc, dc in next dc, ch 5, dc in next dc, ch 5, skip next dc, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc; in corner sp make 3 dc, ch 5 and 3 dc ; dc in next dc, 2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc. Repeat from * around, ending same as rnd 4.

Rnd 7: Ch 5, turn, * dc in next 7 dc; ch 3, sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 3, dc in next dc (lacet made), make lacets across ch-5 sps, ending dc in 1st dc of 7-dc group; dc in next 6 dc, ch 2; in 3rd ch of corner make dc, ch 5 and dc, ch 2. Repeat from * around, ending same as rnd 3.

Rnd 8: Ch 3, turn, (2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc) twice, * ch 5, skip next 5 dc, dc in next dc; ch 5, dc in next dc (bar made over lacet), make bars across lacets, ending dc in 1st dc of 7-dc group, ch 5, skip 5 dc, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc; in corner sp make 3 dc, ch 5 and 3 dc; dc in next dc, 2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc. Repeat from * around, ending same as rnd 4.

Rnds 9 thru 21: Repeat rnds 7 and 8 alternately, ending with rnd 7.

Cut thread and fasten.

Diagonal Bedspread - Joining Blocks

On last rnd, work to 1st corner of block; in corner make dc, ch 5, sl st in corner of finished block, ch 2, sl st in 3rd ch of ch-5 just made, ch 2, dc in corner of block being made, ch 2; dc in next dc, ch 2, sl st in corresponding dc on finished block, ch 2, sl st in dc just completed (joined dc). Work across lacets, joining dcs, and complete next corner to correspond (22 joinings on side). Complete block.

Join other blocks in same manner on adjacent sides.

Diagonal Bedspread - Fringe

Cut 12" length by wrapping thread around a 6" piece of cardboard and cutting at one edge. Double 4 strands tog. holding ends even and pull center of strands thru ch-3 sp at edge of spread with crochet hook, draw cut ends thru lp thus formed and pull tight. Make fringe in each ch-3 sp around edge on both sides and across bottom of spread. Trim ends even.
