This free crochet pattern for a crochet roundabout was originally published in the 1920s in Universal Publishing's Smart Crochet.

Crochet Roundabout - Free Crochet Top Pattern

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Beehive Catriona Crepe, 1-oz. Skeins - 10 (10, 12, 12) sks. English Lilac. Crochet Hook No. 2
18 Silver Buttons

NOTE(s)

This two piece suit for a lady can be crocheted in sizes 12, 14, 16, and 18. The instructions in this pattern are for size 12. Changes for sizes 14, 16, and 18 are in parentheses.

Gauge: 5 shells = 2"; 3 rows = 1".

Bust Measurements: 32 (34, 36, 38)".

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Crochet Roundabout - First Half

Starting at lower edge of sleeve, ch 54 (57, 57, 60).

Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook, * skip 2 ch, 3 hdc in next ch (shell made). Repeat from * across, ending hdc in the last ch. There are 16 (17, 17, 18) shells on row. Ch 2, turn.

Row 2: Shell in 1st hdc, * skip 2 hdc, shell in next hdc; repeat from * across, ending with hdc in top of turning ch. Ch 2, turn.

Repeat row 2 for pat.

Work in patttern until sleeve measures 4 (4 1/2, 4 1/2, 5)".

Inc. Row: Inc. 1 shell at end of row (To Inc. — make a shell in last hdc, hdc in top of turning ch).

Repeat Inc. Row once.

Continue in pattern, working 2 inc. rows after every 4th row until there are 30 (32, 32, 34) shells. Work even until sleeve measures in all 16 (16 1/2, 17, 17 1/2)".

Crochet Roundabout - Body

At end of last row, ch 80 (83, 83, 86) for Front side seam. Work in pat. over ch and across sleeve to end of row, ch 80 (83, 83, 86) sts for Back side seam. Continue in pat. across all sts until 7 (7 1/2, 8, 8 1/2)" from side seam, ending at front edge.

Neck for Roundabout

Row 1: Work 34 (36, 36, 38) shells, turn.

Repeat this 1st row 10 (12, 12, 14) more times. Ch 1, turn.

Next Row: Sc in each hdc across. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat last row once. Break off.

Attach yarn to 11th shell from last shell worked at front of neck. Work across in pat. to lower edge the same as for Front, ending with 2 sc rows. Break off.

Make 2nd Half exactly the same.

Crochet Roundabout - Collar

Ch 60. Work in pat. for 8 rows. Break off.

Attach yarn to first st on 1st row of collar.

Row 1: Work sc closely across narrow edge, long edge and narrow edge, working 3 sc in each corner st. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Sc in each sc across. Break off. Make another piece in same manner. Sew one Collar to neck edge on each Half.

Finishing the Roundabout

Sew 9 buttons evenly spaced along Left Front edge and on Right Back edge. The spaces between shells represent buttonholes. Stitch overlapping edges at back of neck, having edges of Collar meet in center.

Drawstring: Make a ch 42" long. Break off. Pull drawstring through spaces 3" from lower edge of blouse and tie in front.
