Bucilla Crochelle or Fleisher's Glo-Twist, 16 Balls
Bucilla or Fleisher's Steel Crochet Hook, Size 7

NOTE(s)

This crochet baby coat, together with this handmade baby bonnet and pair of baby booties, make a charming outfit for that newborn infant!

This crochet coat size is from newborn infant to 6 months.

A charming sacque, instead of long coat, may be made if desired. To make the sacque, work the same as long coat until 7 inches below underarm, end with row 2 of pat. End with the final row which is the same as the final row of long coat. Complete same as long coat. (Requires 10 balls).

GAUGE: 10 dc = 1 inch; 5 dc rows = 1 inch
6 patterns — 3 1/2 inches; 4 pattern rows = 1 inch

MEASUREMENTS — Chest 19 1/2 inches, length of long coat from lower edge to underarm 15 1/2 inches, sleeves width is 7 inches.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Crochet Coat Pattern - Yoke

Ch 98 for lower edge of back, 1 dc in 4th st from hook, 1 dc in each remaining st of ch; 96 dc, including ch 3. Always count ch 3 as 1 dc.

Row 2 — right side — Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in 2nd and each remaining st, end 1 dc in top of ch 3.

Row 3 — Same as row 2.

Crochet Coat Pattern Armholes

Row 4 — Ch 3, turn, yo, draw up a loop in next st, yo, through 2 loops, yo, draw up a loop in next st, yo, through 2 loops, yo, through 3 loops (a dec), 1 dc in each st to within 3 sts of end, dec. 1 st as before, 1 dc in turning ch; 94 dc.

Work 1 row even.

Dec. 1 st each side of next row; 92 dc.

Work 13 rows even.

Crochet Coat Pattern Right Shoulder and Front

Row 20 — Ch 3. turn. 1 dc in 2nd and each of next 28 sts; 30 dc. Turn.

Work even on these 30 sts for 8 rows more, end at neck edge, drop loop from hook; join separate strand in same st as last dc was worked in, ch 16 for front of neck, fasten off; pick up dropped loop and work 1 sc in each st of ch; 46 dc.

Work 6 rows even.

Row 35 — Work dc to within 2 sts of end (underarm), 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in turning ch.

Work 1 row even.

Row 37 — Same as row 35; 48 dc.

Work 3 rows even. Fasten off.

Crochet Coat Pattern Left Shoulder and Front

Row 20 — Skip next 32 sts on last long row, with loop on hook work 1 dc in next st. continue dc to end; 30 sts.

Work 7 rows even.

Row 28 — Ch 18 for front of neck, 1 dc in 4th st from hook and in each ch and st to end; 46 sts.

Complete to correspond to other side. Fasten off.

Sew side seams for 3 rows at lower edge.

Crochet Coat Pattern - Edging

Beginning at lower edge, work 2 sc in end of each row on right front edge; 26 sc. Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first st, * ch 3 for buttonhole, skip 3 sts, 1 sc in each of next 7 sts; repeat from * twice, end last repeat 1 sc in each of 2 sts.

Next row, ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st and ch. Fasten off.

Beginning at neck edge, work 3 rows sc on left front edge to correspond, omitting buttonholes; do not fasten off at end of last row.

Continue around lower edge, working 51 sc across left front; 97 sc across back; 51 sc across right front; 199 sc.

Row 2 — X st row — Ch 5, turn, 1 long tr (yo hook 3 times) in 2nd st, * ch 3, yo hook 3 times, skip 3 sts, draw up a loop in next st (5 loops on hook), yo, through 2 loops, yo, through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), draw up a loop in center of last long tr, yo, through 3 loops, yo, through 2 loops (X st pat.), 1 long tr in same st as last half of X st *; repeat between *'s, end last repeat 1 long tr in last st; 49 X st pats., plus 1 st each side.

Row 3 — Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first st, * 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in sp, 1 sc in next st *; repeat between *'s, end 1 sc in top of turning ch; 198 sc.

Crochet Coat Pattern - Body

Row 1 — wrong side — Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in 2nd st, * skip 1 st, 1 tr (yo hook twice) in next st, ch 4, 4 tr around post of tr just worked, skip 1 st, 2 dc in next st; repeat from * across row: 49 pats.

Row 2 — Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in 2nd dc, * ch 2, 1 sc in top of ch 4, ch 2, 1 dc in each of 2 dc; repeat from *, end last repeat ch 2, 1 dc in dc, 1 dc in turning ch.

Row 3 — Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in 2nd dc, * skip the ch 2, 1 trin next sc, ch 4, 4 tr around post of tr just worked, skip the ch 2, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc; repeat from * across row.

Repeat last 2 rows until there are 56 pat. rows in all, end with row 2.

Final Row — Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each of first 2 dc, * ch 2, 1 sc in next sc, ch 2, 1 sc in each of next 2 dc; repeat from *, end 1 sc in last dc, 1 sc in turning ch. Fasten off.

Crochet Coat Pattern - Sleeves

Ch 75 for top of sleeve.

Row 1 — 1 tr in 5th st from hook, * ch 4, 4 tr around post of tr just worked, skip 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, skip 2 sts, 1 tr in next st; repeat from * 10 times, ch 4, 4 tr around post of last tr, skip 3 sts, 1 sc in last st; 12 pats.

Row 2 — Ch 5, turn, 1 sc in top of ch 4, * ch 2,1 dc in each of 2 dc, ch 2, 1 sc in top of ch 4 *; repeat between *'s 10 times, ch 2, skip tr on row below, work 1 dc in next st (top of turning ch).

Row 3 — Ch 3, turn, skip the ch 2, 1 tr in next sc, ch 4, 4 tr around post of last tr worked, continue pat., end skip 2 sts of turning ch, 1 dc in next st.

Repeat last 2 rows until there are 28 rows in all, end with row 2. Do not break.

Cuffs

Ch 1, turn, work 40 sc across row, spacing sts evenly. Ch 3, turn. Work 3 rows dc. Fasten off.

Crochet Coat Pattern - Collar

Working from right side, with loop on hook, work 81 sc around neck edge (15 on each front, 10 each side, 31 on back).

Row 2 — Ch 1, turn, slip st over first 7 sts, ch 3, 2 dc in next st, * 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st; repeat from * 21 times, 1 dc in next st, leave remaining 6 sts free; 92 dc.

Row 3 — Ch 5, turn, 1 long tr in 2nd st, repeat between *'s of row 2 of beading across row, skipping 2 sts instead of 3 between halves of X st; 30 X st pats., plus 1 st each side. Fasten off.

Row 4 — Turn, work around collar as follows; join with slip st in 5th sc from front edge, work 7 sc on side edge, continue on outer edge working 2 sc in first st, * 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in ch 2 sp, 1 sc in next st *, repeat between *'s 29 times, 2 sc in top of turning ch, 7 sc on side edge; 138 sc, slip st in 5th sc from front edge.

Row 5 — Slip st in each of next 2 sc. Turn, 5 tr in first sc on edge of collar, * skip 3 sts, 1 tr in next st, ch 4, 4 tr around post of last tr made *; repeat between *'s, end with slip st in 3rd st from front edge. Fasten off.
