This free crochet pattern for a crochet blanket was originally published in the 1920s in Universal Publishing's Smart Crochet.



Follow the easy step-by-step instructions of this vintage crochet pattern to make this classic crochet afghan. There is absolutely no charge for personal use of this crocheted afghan pattern.

Crochet Blanket - Free Crochet Pattern

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Botany Germantown Knitting Worsted (4-oz. Skeins)
10 Skeins Regent (MC); 5 Skeins Maris Blue (CC)
10" Afghan Hook No. 5

NOTE(s)

Gauge for this Crochet Blanket:5 sts = 1"; 4 rows = 1"

Afghan St - For half and full squares.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Row 1: Draw up a lp in each ch across, retaining all lps on hook. Work off lps as follows: YO, draw through 1 lp, * yo and through 2 lps, repeat from * across. The last lp on hook counts as the 1st st of next row.

Row 2: Draw up a lp under each vertical bar across, retaining all lps on hook, yo and through 1 lp, * yo and through 2 lps, repeat from * across. Repeat row 2 for pat.

Crochet Blanket - Half Squares (Make 20)

With MC, ch 40. Work in afghan st, dec. 1 st each side until all sts are worked off. To dec. at beg. of row: Insert hook under first 2 vertical bars and draw up a lp. To dec. at end of row: Insert hook under last 2 vertical bars and draw up a lp.

Crochet Blanket - Full Squares (Make 38)

With MC, ch 2. Work in plain afghan st. Inc. 1 st on each side until there are 40 lps on hook. To inc. at beg. of row: Insert hook between lp on hook and first vertical bar and draw up a lp. To inc. at end of row: Insert hook between last 2 vertical bars and draw up a lp. Now, dec. 1 st each side until all sts are worked off.

Crochet Blanket - Cable Strips

Make each strip as long as needed according to chart to connect squares. With CC ch 8. Draw up a lp in each st of ch, leaving all lps on hook. Take lps off same as in plain afghan st.

Row 1: Bring yarn forward and hold below next vertical bar, draw up a lp in same vertical bar (purl st). * Insert hook through the center of next upright st and draw up a lp (knit st) repeat from * 3 times more, purl 1 st in next st, draw up a lp under last vertical bar. Work lps off same as before.

Rows 2, 3, 4 and 5: Same as row 1.

Row 6: Pick up lps same as in row 1. Take lps back as follows: Yarn over hook, draw yarn through 2 lps, slip hook out of last lp on hook and the 4 knit lps, twist them by slipping hook into first 2 lps on left hand side then slip hook through 2 lps on right hand side, then slip hook through first lp on needle, work back same as before.

Repeat these 6 rows for pat.

Finishing the Crochet Blanket

Sew squares together with cable strip in between according to chart. With MC, work 3 rows sc around entire afghan, working 3 sc in each corner.
