Bucilla Crochelle or Fleisher's Glo-Twist,
3 Balls Main Color (A)
1/4 Ball Contrasting Color (B) for Embroidered Flowers
Bucilla Six Strand, 2 Skeins Green, 1 Skein Yellow
Bucilla or Fleisher's Steel Crochet Hook, Size 6

NOTE(s)

This crochet baby bonnet is for an infant from age 6 months to 1 year. It is part of a charming baby gift set that also includes an embroidered baby blanket, a flowery baby sweater, an embroidered pillowcase, and a pair of crochet baby booties.

The gauge for this crochet baby bonnet:
9 sc = 1 inch; 10 rows = 1 inch
4 shell rows = 1 inch

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Crochet Baby Bonnet - Center Back

Ch 3, join with slip st into ring, ch 1, work 6 sc in ring, join with slip st in first sc.

Round 2 — Ch 1, turn, work 2 sc in each sc to end of round, join; 12 sc.

Round 3 — Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first sc, * 2 sc in next sc (an inc.), 1 sc in next sc; repeat from * around, end 2 sc in last sc, join; 18 sc.

Round 4 — Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each of first 2 sc, * 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc; repeat from * around, end 2 sc in last st, join; 24 sc.

Repeat last round having 1 sc more between increases every round until there are 48 sc.

Round 9 — Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in same st as slip st, * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc all in next st (a shell); repeat from * around, end ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, 2 more dc in same st as first dc, ch 2, slip st in top of ch 3; 12 shells.

Round 10 — Turn, slip st in first ch 2 sp, ch 3, 1 dc in same sp, * ch 1, skip last 2 dc of shell, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, 1 shell in ch 2 sp of next shell; repeat from *, end ch 1, skip last 2 dc of shell, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, skip first 2 dc of next shell, 2 more dc in ch 2 sp, ch 2, join with slip st in top of ch 3.

Round 11 — Turn, slip st in first ch 2 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, * ch 1, skip last 2 dc of shell. 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc all in next shell; repeat from *, end as for round 10 with 3 dc in half of shell instead of 2 dc.

Round 12 — Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first ch 2 sp, * ch 2, skip 2 dc on shell, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, 1 dc in next dc (first dc of next shell), ch 2, skip 2 dc, 1 sc in ch 2 sp of shell; repeat from *, end ch 2, skip 2 dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, 1 dc in next dc, ch 2, skip 2 dc, slip st in first sc.

Round 13 — Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in same st as slip st, * 2 sc in each of next 4 sp, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from *, end 2 sc in each of next 4 sp, 1 more sc in same st as first sc; join.

Round 14 — Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each sc, join; 120 sc.

Repeat round 14 twice.

Crochet Baby Bonnet - Pattern

Row 1 — Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in same st as slip st (half shell), * ch 1, skip 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, ch 1, skip 2 sts, shell of 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc all in next st; repeat from * 13 times, end ch 1, skip 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, ch 1, skip 2 sts, 2 dc (half shell) in next st; 14 shells and 2 half shells; leave remaining sts free for back of neck.

Row 2 — Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in same st as ch 3, ch 1, skip 1 dc, 1 dc in next dc, * ch 1, 1 shell in next shell, ch 1, skip last 2 dc of shell, 1 dc in next dc; repeat from *, end ch 1, 2 dc in top of turning ch.

Repeat last row, 6 times.

Row 9 — Ch 3, turn, 2 dc in same st as ch 3, continue pat. as before, working 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in each shell, end ch 1, 3 dc in turning ch.

Repeat last row 6 times.

Row 16 — Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first st, ch 1, skip 1 st, * 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, 1 dc in next dc (first dc of next shell), eh 2, skip 2 sts, 1 sc in next sp, ch 2, skip 2 sts; repeat from *, end last repeat ch 1, 1 sc in turning ch.

Crochet Baby Bonnet - Front Band

Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first st, * 2 sc in next sp, 1 sc in next sp, 1 sc in top of next dc, 1 sc in next sp, 2 sc in next sp, 1 sc in next sc; repeat from * to end; 121 sc.

Row 2 — Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st.

Repeat last row 9 times.

Crochet Baby Bonnet - Neck Band

Ch 1, do not turn, continue working along side of sc rows, spacing sts evenly, 1 sc in each of first 10 rows, 22 sc along side of pat. rows, 25 sc at back of neck, 22 sc along side of pat. rows, 10 sc on side of sc rows; 89 sc.

Row 2 — Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st.

Repeat last row 7 times.

Fasten off. Last row is worked on right side.

Crochet Baby Bonnet - Ruffle

Holding back of cap toward you, fold work toward front on first sc row of front band, working from right side and inserting hook through fold, work 1 sc between first and 2nd sc of first row of band, ch 1, 1 sc between 3rd and 4th sc of same row, ch 1, 1 sc between 5th and 6th sc, continue in this way across row; 60 sc with ch 1 between.

Row 2 — Ch 4, turn, * 1 dc under ch 1, ch 1, 1 dc in next sc, ch 1; repeat from *. end 1 dc in last st; 119 dc with ch 1 between, including turning ch.

Row 3 — Ch 3, turn, 1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc all in first dc, * ch 1, skip 1 dc. 1 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, skip 1 dc, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc all in next dc; repeat from * across row; 40 shells.

Row 4 — Ch 3, turn, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc all in first shell, * ch 1, skip last 2 dc of shell; 1 dc in next dc. ch 1, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc all in next shell; repeat from * to end. Fasten off.

Crochet Baby Bonnet - Finishing

Steam lightly. Fold ruffle hack forming 6 scallops, allowing 6 shells for each scallop and 2 shells at each end. Tack scallops in place. With contrasting color make 6 flowers as for sweater. Sew in place and embroider as for sweater, see illustration. Trim with ribbon.
