This christening set is for infant from newborn to 6 months.

Measurements: Chest 20 inches, length from lower edge to neck edge of sacque 9 1/2 inches, of long coat 17 1/2 inches, sleeves — width 7 inches.

Gauge: Yoke — 9 dc = l inch, 10 rows = 2 inches Pattern — 1 pattern = l inch, 10 rows = 2 inches

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

CHRISTENING SET SACQUE

YOKE

Ch 94 for neck edge.

Row 1 — 1 dc in 4th st from hook, 1 dc in each st of ch; 92 dc.

Row 2 — Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), turn, 1 dc in 2nd and in each of next 8 dc, 2 dc in next st, * 1 dc in each of next 5 sts, 2 dc in next st; repeat from * 11 times, 1 dc in each of next 9 sts; 105 dc.

Row 3 — Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in each of 3 dc, inc. 1 dc in next st and every 8th st until 13 increases, end 4 dc; 118 dc.

Row 4 — Ch 3, turn, work 4 dc, inc. in next st and every 9th st, end 4 dc; 131 dc.

Row 5 — Ch 3, turn, work 4 dc, inc. in next st and every 10th st, end 5 dc; 144 dc.

Continue increasing 13 sts in each of next 5 rows, working1 st more between increases and 1 st more at alternate sides each row; 209 dc.

PATTERN

Row 1 — wrong side — Ch 4, turn, work 2 dc with ch 1 between (1/2 shell) in first dc, ^ * skip 2 sts, 2 dc with ch 1 between in next st, skip 2 sts, 5 dc with ch 1 between (1 shell) in next st *; repeat between *'s once, skip 1 st, 2 dc with ch 1 between in next st, skip 1 st, 1 shell in next st; repeat from ^, end last repeat 3 dc with ch 1 between in turning ch; 38 shells and 1/2 shell each side.

Row 2 — Ch 4, turn, 1 sc in ch 1 sp, ch 3, 1 sc in next sp, * 2 dc with ch 3 between under next ch 1 sp, 1 sc in first sp of shell, ^ ch 3, 1 sc in next sp; repeat from ^ twice *; repeat between *'s, end 1 sc in first sp of half shell, ch 3, 1 sc, ch 3, 1 sc in last sp.

Row 3 — Ch 4, turn, 1 dc in first sp, * skip 1 sp, 1 shell of 5 dc with ch 1 between under next ch 3, skip 1 sp, 2 dc with ch 3 between in center sp above next shell *; repeat between *'s, end last repeat 2 dc with ch 1 between in last sp.

Row 4 — Ch 4, turn, 1 dc in first sp, * 1 sc in first sp of shell, ^ ch 3, 1 sc in next sp; repeat from ^ twice, 2 dc with ch 3 between under next ch 3 *; repeat between *'s, end last repeat 2 dc with ch 1 between in last sp.

Row 5 — Ch 4, turn, 2 dc with ch 1 between in first sp, skip ch 3 sp, 2 dc with ch 3 between in center sp above shell; repeat between *'s of row 3, end 3 dc with ch 1 between in last sp.

Row 6 — Work same as row 2, working in ch 3 sp between shells instead of ch 1. Repeat last 4 rows for pat. Work even until 10 pat. rows, end with row 6 of pat.

BODY

Next row, work same as row 3 until there are 7 shells, skip 1 sp, 1 dc in center sp above next shell, skip 7 pats, for armhole, ch 3, 1 dc through last sp worked and through center sp above 14th shell, continue pat. until there are 11 shells more, 1 dc in center sp of next shell, skip 7 pats., ch 3, 1 dc through last sp worked and through center sp of 32nd shell, work 7 shells, end 2 dc with ch 1 between in last sp. Work pat. even until 24 rows from underarm. Fasten off.

SLEEVES

Beginning at underarm with row 3 of pat., work even on 7 pats, for 17 rows.

Cuffs—Ch 3, turn, 1 dc under each ch 1 and ch 3, 1 dc in turning ch; 38 dc. Work 3 rows more in dc.

Edging—Ch 4, turn, 1 sc in 2nd dc, * ch 3, skip 1 st, 1 sc in next st; repeat from * to end. Fasten off. Working from right side, beginning at lower edge of right front, work 1 row sc on fronts and around neck edge, keeping work flat. Fasten off. Working from same side, repeat edging of cuffs. Sew seams. Steam lightly. Use ch 3 of edging as buttonloops. If desired embroider as illustrated in 3-leaf motifs of lazy-daisy st with contrasting color french knot centers.

CHRISTENING SET CAP

Ch 4, join with slip st into ring.

Round 1 — Ch 3, 11 dc in ring, join with slip st in 3rd ch in this and subsequent rounds; 12 dc.

Round 2 — Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in same place as joining st, 2 dc in each st to end; 24 dc.

Round 3 — Same as round 2; 48 dc.

Round 4 — Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in joining st, * 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st; repeat from * to end; 64 dc.

Round 5 — Ch 3, turn, inc. in every 10th st 6 times, finish round; 70 dc.

Round 6 — Ch 3, turn, inc. in every 10th st 7 times; 77 dc.

Round 7 — Ch 3, turn, inc. in every 11th st 7 times; 84 dc.

PATTERN

Round 1 — wrong side — Ch 3, turn, * skip 2 dc, 1 shell of 5 dc with ch 1 between in next st, skip 2 sts, 2 dc with ch 3 between in next st; repeat from *, end last repeat 1 dc in same st as turning ch, ch 3, join with slip st in top of turning ch; 14 pats.

Round 2 — Ch 1, turn, slip st in first sp, ch 3, 1 sc in first sp of shell, ch 3, 1 sc in next sp, continue as for pat. row 4 of sacque, end 1 dc in same sp as first ch 3, ch 3, join as before.

Round 3 — Ch 1, turn, slip st in first sp, ch 4, 2 dc with ch 1 between in same sp (1/2 shell), continue as for pat. row 5 of sacque, end 2 dc with ch 1 between in same sp as first 1/2 shell, ch 1, join in 3rd ch.

Round 4 — Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first sp, ch 3, 1 sc in next sp, 2 dc with ch 3 between under next ch 3, continue pat., end ch 3, join with slip st in first sc.

First Short Row — Work same as pat. row 3 of sacque until 12 pats. Continue pat. as for sacque on 12 pats, for 18 rows more.

Next Row — Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first sp, * ch 1, skip 1 sp, 1 sc in center sp of shell, ch 1, skip 1 sp, 1 shell under next ch 3; repeat from *, end ch 1, 1 sc in center sp of shell, ch 1, 1 sc in last sp. Ch 3, turn; skip 2 sc, 1 sc under ch 1 before shell, ch 3 and 1 sc in each of 4 sp of first shell, * ch 1, skip 2 sp, 1 sc in first sp of shell, ch 3 and 1 sc in each of next 3 sp; repeat from *, end ch 3, 1 sc under ch 1 after last shell, ch 1, 1 sc in last sp.

Neckband — Continuing last row, ch 3, work 5 dc in every 3 rows on side of neck; 30 dc, 7 dc across back and 30 dc on other side. Work 2 rows even in dc. Fasten off. Steam lightly.

CHRISTENING SET BOOTEES

Instep Tab — Ch 17 for width across instep, 1 dc in 4th st from hook and in each st of ch; 15 dc.

Row 2 — Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in 2nd dc and in every dc, 1 dc in top of turning ch. Repeat last row until there are 7 rows.

Foot — Ch 17, work 15 dc on ch, 16 dc along side of instep, 15 dc on foundation ch, 16 dc along other side of instep; join separate strand in same place as last dc, ch 15, fasten off; continue row, working 15 dc on ch; 77 dc. Work 2 rows even. Fasten off.

Working along upper part of instep and sides, join in end st of foundation ch.

Row 1 — wrong side — Ch 4, 1 dc in first st, skip 2 sts, * 1 shell of 5 dc with ch 1 between in next st, skip 2 sts, 2 dc with ch 3 between in next st, skip 3 sts *; repeat between *'s to end; 6 pats. Work next row same as pat. row 4 of sacque. Work 6 rows even in pat. Fasten off. Sew up back.

Sole — Ch 16; work 14 dc for 14 rows. Join sole to bootee by working 1 row of sc through both upper and sole, holding upper toward you. Holding work the same way, work 1 row sc around sides and bottom of instep tab. Fasten off. Steam lightly.

Cords — With 2 strands, ch 5, join with slip st into ring, 8 sc in ring, join, ch 13 ins., join end into ring with slip st in 6th st from hook, 8 sc in ring, join. Fasten off. Weave through first pat. row as illustrated. Embroider if desired.

CHRISTENING SET LONG COAT

Work same as sacque until 4 rows below armholes. Then separate for back and fronts.

RIGHT FRONT

First Inc. Row — Work as for pat. row 3 until there are 7 shells, skip 1 sp, end 2 dc with ch 3 between in center sp of next shell.

2nd Inc. Row — Ch 4, turn, 2 dc with ch 3 between in first sp, finish same as pat. row 4, keeping front edge even.

3rd Inc. Row — Work same as pat. row 5, having 1/2 shell at front edge, 7 shells, end 2 dc with ch 1 between in last sp (1/2 pat. increased at underarm).

4th Inc. Row — Ch 4, 1 dc in first sp, 1 sc in first sp of shell, ch 3, 1 sc in next sp, finish row.

Work 10 rows even. Repeat last 14 rows until there are 9 1/2 pats. Work even until 17 1/2 ins. from neck edge or desired length, end with pat. row 4 or 6. Fasten off.

BACK

Work from same side as first inc. row of right front, with loop on hook, work 2 dc with ch 3 between in same sp as last dc of first inc. row, skip 1 sp, 1 shell under next ch 3, continue pat. to left underarm, end 2 dc with ch 3 between in center sp above next shell; 11 shells.

2nd Inc. Row — Ch 4, turn, 2 dc with ch 3 between in first sp, 1 sc in first sp of shell, ch 3, 1 sc in next sp, continue pat., end 2 dc with ch 3 between in last sp, ch 1, 1 dc in last st.

3rd Inc. Row — Ch 4, turn, 1 dc in first sp, 1 shell under next ch 3, continue pat., end 2 dc with ch 1 between in last sp; 1/2 shell increased at each side.

4th Inc. Row — Ch 4, turn, 1 dc in first sp, 1 sc in first sp of shell, ch 3, 1 sc in next sp, continue pat., end 2 dc with ch 1 between in last sp. Work next row same as 5th pat. row. Work 9 rows even.

Next row — Ch 6, turn, 1 dc in first sp, skip 1 sp, 1 shell under next ch 3, continue pat., end 2 dc with ch 3 between in last sp.

Repeat 2nd, 3rd and 4th inc. rows.

Work 10 rows even.

Work as for last 14 rows until increases and length correspond to right front. Fasten off.

LEFT FRONT

Working from same side as first row of back, work 2 dc with ch 3 between in same sp as last dc of back; finish to correspond to right front, working increases at underarm edge, keeping front edge even.

SLEEVES AND EDGING

Work as for christening set sacque.

FINISHING

Sew seams. Steam lightly. Use ch 3 of edging as buttonloops.

Embroider if desired.
