Easy Crochet Pattern for a Pot Holder

This free crochet pattern for cat potholders of Wynken, Blynken, and Nod, were published in the 1950s in Lily Pot Holders and Oven Mitts.



Follow the easy step-by-step instructions of this crochet pattern to make these pot holders that looks like cats. There is absolutely no charge for personal use of this easy crochet pattern for a potholder.

Cat Potholders

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Art. 600 Lily Cotton Yarn Skeins or
Art. 930 Sugar 'N Cream Yarn Balls
2 Skeins or Balls Cream and
Art. 39 Lily Pearl Cotton Size 5 - 1 Ball Black
Art. 21 Lily Six Strand Floss - 2 Skeins Scarlet
Crochet Hooks Nos. 0 and 5

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Head Pattern for Cat Potholders

With Cream Yarn and No. 0 hook ch 11, sk 1 ch, sc in next 2 ch, hdc in next 2 ch, holding back the last lp of each dc on hook, make dc in next 2 ch, yarn over and draw thru all lps on hook (Cluster-decrease made), hdc in next 2 ch, sc in next 2 ch.

Row 2 - Ch 3, turn, hdc and sc in 1st sc, sc in next 7 sts, sc, hdc and dc in end st.

Row 3 - Ch 3, turn, hdc and sc in 1st st, make sc across with sc, hdc and dc in end ch. Repeat once.

Row 5 - Ch 3, turn, sc in each st across with sc and hdc in end ch.

Repeat Rows 3 and 5.

Row 8 - Ch 2, turn, sc in each st across to end ch.

Repeat Rows 5 and 8.

Rows 11 thru 18 - (Ch 1, turn, sc in the 32 sc of last row) for 8 rows.

Row 19 - Ch 1, turn, sk 1st sc, sc in each remaining sc across to 3d from end, draw up lps in 2 end sc, yarn over and draw thru all 3 lps on hook, (a 2-sc decrease made).

Row 20 - Ch 12, turn, sk 1 ch, sc in next 4 ch, hdc in next 4 ch, a sc-decrease in next 2 ch, hdc in next ch, a sc-decrease in next 2 sc, * sc in next 26 sc, a sc-decrease in 2 end sc.

Row 21 - Repeat Row 20 to *. ** Sc in next 25 sc, a decrease in next 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts, a decrease in next 2 sts, sc in next st.

Row 22 - Ch 1, turn, sc in 3 sc, a decrease in next 2 sc. Repeat Row 21 from ** to end.

Row 23 - Ch 1, turn, sc in 3 sc, a decrease in next 2 sc, sc in next 29 sts, hdc down in next st on previous row, sc in next st.

Row 24 - Ch 1, turn, sc in 6 sc. a decrease in next 2 sc, sc in next 27 sc, hdc in next st down on previous row, sc in next st.

Row 25 - Ch 1, turn, sc in 6 sc, a decrease in next 2 sc, sc in next 28 sts, hdc down in next st on previous row, sc in next st.

Row 26 - Ch 1, turn, sk sc, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next st, 2 dc in next st, hdc in next sc, a decrease in next 2 sc, * sc in next 28 sc, hdc down in next sc on previous row, sc in next sc.

Row 27 - Repeat Row 26 to *. Sc in next 4 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, (dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st) twice, dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 4 sts, sl st in next sc. Fasten off.

Turn, sc, ch 3, sc in tip of right-hand ear, work sc around head with sc, ch 3, sc in tip of other ear. Join to 1st sc and cut. Make 3 Heads.

Crochet Pattern for Open Eye

With Black Pearl Cotton and No. 5 hook ch 8, 2 dc in 5th ch from hook, dc in next 3-ch.

Rows 2 and 3 - (Ch 1, turn, sc in 6 sts) for 2 rows.

Row 4 - Ch 3, turn, sk 1 sc, holding back the last lp of each dc on hook, make dc in next 5 sc, yarn over and draw thru all lps on hook (Cluster made), ch 20, sl st down at base of Row 1. Fasten off. Make 3 Eyes.

Crochet Pattern for Closed Eye

With Black Floss ch 14, Fasten off. Make 3.

Crocheting the Nose for the Cat Potholders

With Black Floss ch 8, sk 1 ch, sc in next 7 ch.

Row 2 - Ch 1, turn, sk 1 sc, sc in next 4 sc, a decrease in 2 end sc.

Row 3 - Ch 1, turn sk 1 sc, sc in next 2 sc, a decrease in 2 end sc.

Row 4 - Ch 1, turn, sk 1 sc, a decrease in 2 end sc, ch 13, sk 1 ch, sl st in next 10 ch, ch 11, sk 1 ch, sl st in next 10 ch, sl st in next 2 ch, sl st in nose. Fasten off.

Crocheting the Tongue for the Cat Potholders

With Scarlet Floss ch 4, sk 1 ch, sc in next 3 ch.

Row 2- Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in 1st sc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in end sc.

Rows 3 and 4 - (Ch 1, turn, sc in 5 sc) for 2 rows.

Row 5 - Ch 1, turn, sc in 1st sc, hdc in next sc, dc in next sc, hdc in next sc, sc in next sc.

Edge - Work sc around to other end of Row 5, Fasten off.

Assembling Wynken Potholder

Sew an Open Eye 1" from left edge across Rows 15 to 20. Make Black eyelashes out from 2/3'ds of ch-20. Sew a Closed Eye 1" from Open Eye across Rows 16 to 19. Make eyelashes below ch. Sew Tongue In center across Rows 3 to 6 with Row 5 at top. Sew Nose and Mouth above Tongue, With Black Floss embroider 5 lines on ears, 3 sts for each eyebrow and 3 long lines on each side for whiskers as illustrated.

Assembling Blynken Potholder

Assemble in same way, using 2 Open Eyes 1" apart.

Assembling Nod Potholder

Use 2 Closed Eyes and a Nose. Instead of Tongue, make a short Black line below mouth.

Cover bone rings with sc in Scarlet Floss. Sew one to top of each holder. Steam and press holders dry on back thru a cloth. Line back of each with cloth.
