Carriage Set - Crochet Baby Blanket
Free Vintage Crochet Pattern

This free dainty carriage set crochet pattern for a cute carriage and pillow cover was originally published in 1947 in the Sultana Baby Book, Vol S17.



Follow the easy step-by-step instructions of this crochet pattern to make this classic carriage cover and pillow cover set. There is absolutely no charge for personal use of this crochet baby blanket pattern.

Crochet Baby Blanket - Carriage Set

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Sultana Beautysheen: Carriage Cover - 14 Balls; Pillow Cover - 5 Balls
Steel Crochet Hook, Size 5

NOTE(s)

Measurements — Carriage set cover is 24 inches by 27 1/2 inches, without border. Carriage set pillow 11 1/2 inches by 16 inches, without border.

Gauges: 5 meshes = l inch, 9 rows = 2 inches

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Carriage Set Cover

Ch 246 for lower edge, 1 dc in 6th st from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 dc in next st; repeat from * to end; 121 m.

Row 2 — Ch 4, turn, 1 dc in 2nd dc (begin all rows in this way to make first m), work 4 more m, * 1 dc in next sp, 1 dc in next dc, work 9m*; repeat between *'s 11 times, end last repeat with 4 m, ch 1, skip 1 st of turning ch, 1 dc in next st (end all rows in this way to make last m).

Row 3 — Work 4 m, * 1 dc in sp, 1 dc in next dc, ch 5, skip 1 dc, 1 dc in next dc, 1 dc in sp, 1 dc in next dc, work 7 m*; repeat between *'s, end last repeat with 4 m.

Row 4 — Work 3 m, * 1 dc in next sp, 1 dc in next dc, ch 5, skip 2 dc, 1 sc under 5 ch, ch 5, skip 2 dc, 1 dc in next dc, 1 dc in sp, 1 dc in next dc, work 5 m*; repeat between *'s, end last repeat with 3 m.

Row 5 — Work 2 m, * 1 dc in sp, 1 dc in next dc, ch 5, 1 sc in next sp, 1 sc in sc, 1 sc in next sp, ch 5, skip 2 dc, 1 dc in next dc, 1 dc in sp, 1 dc in dc, work 3 m*; repeat between *'s, end last repeat with 2 m.

Row 6 — Work 1 m, * 1 dc in sp, 1 dc in next dc, ch 5, 1 sc in next sp, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc, 1 sc in next sp, ch 5, skip 2 dc, 1 dc in next dc, 1 dc in sp, 1 dc in next dc, work 1 m *; repeat between *'s to end.

Row 7 — Work 2 m, * 2 dc in next sp, ch 5, skip 1 sc, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc, ch 5, skip 1 sc, 2 dc in next sp, 1 dc in next dc, work 3 m*; repeat between *'s, end last repeat with 2 m.

Row 8 — Work 3 m, * 2 dc in next sp, ch 5, 1 sc in center sc, ch 5, 2 dc in next sp, 1 dc in next dc, work 5 m*; repeat between *'s, end last repeat with 3 m.

Row 9 — Work 4 m, * 2 dc in next sp, ch 1, 2 dc in next sp, 1 dc in dc, work 7 m*; repeat between *'s, end last repeat with 4 m.

Row 10 — Work 5 m, * 1 dc in next sp, 1 dc in dc, work 4 m*; repeat between *'s, end last repeat with 5 m.

Row 11 — Work 9 m; repeat between *'s of row 3, end last repeat with 9 m.

Repeat Rows 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, having 5 m more at beginning and end of every row.

Row 18 — Same as row 10.

Repeat last 16 rows (from row 3 to row 18 inclusive) 6 times.

Repeat rows 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 once more.

Row 122 — Work 5 m, * 1 dc in next sp, 1 dc in dc, work 9 m*; repeat between *'s, end last repeat with 5 m. Work 1 row m.

Carriage Set Edging

Row 1 — right side — Ch 3, turn, 5 dc in corner sp, 1 dc in next dc, * 1 dc in next sp, 1 dc in next dc; repeat from * to corner, 11 dc in corner sp; continue along side edge (keeping work flat and having a multiple of 10 plus 9) to corner, 11 dc in corner sp; work other 2 sides to correspond, end with 5 dc in same sp as first 5 dc; join with slip st in top of turning ch. Total number of sts around entire carriage set cover, including turning ch, should be a multiple of 10.

Round 2 — Ch 6, do not turn, * 1 long tr (yo 3 times) in same st as slip st, ch 2; repeat from * twice, end last repeat ch 1 instead of ch 2, skip 4 dc, 1 sc in next dc, t ch 1, skip 4 dc, 1 shell of 5 long tr with ch 2 between in next dc, ch 1, skip 4 dc, 1 sc in next dc; repeat from t to corner, 1 shell of 8 long tr, with ch 2 between in center corner st; finish round, working all corners alike, end with 4 long tr with ch 2 between in last corner, ch 2; join with slip st in 4th st of ch 6.

Round 3 — Ch 1, do not turn, 1 sc in joining st, 3 dc under next ch 2, 1 sc in long tr, * 3 dc in next sp, 1 sc in tr *, ^ 3 dc in next sp, draw up a loop in last long tr of shell, skip sc, draw up a loop in first long tr of next shell, yo and through all 3 loops ^; repeat between *'s 3 times, repeat between ^'s once; continue in this way to end of round, having 4 small shells over each shell, 7 small shells over corner shells; join with slip st.

Fasten off. Steam lightly. Line cover. Trim as illustrated.

Carriage Set Pillow Cover

Ch 166.

Work same as for cover on 81 m, until 49 rows from beginning.

Row 50 — Work 10 m, * 1 dc in next sp, 1 dc in dc, work 9 m; repeat from *, end with 10 m. Work 1 row of m.

Work edging as for cover. Steam lightly. Sew to pillow form.

You have now finished crocheting this dainty carriage set.
