Butterfly Stole - Crochet Shawl
Free Crochet Stole Pattern

This free crochet pattern for a butterfly stole was originally published in the 1940s in The Famous Puritan Crochet Book. You will love it!



Follow the easy step-by-step instructions of this vintage crochet shawl pattern to crochet this classic butterfly stole. There is absolutely no charge for personal use of this crocheted shawl pattern.

Crochet Shawl - Butterfly Stole

REQUIRED MATERIALS

AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY
The Famous "PURITAN" CROCHET COTTON, Article 40
8 balls Turquoise or Color of your Choice OR
The Famous "PURITAN" STAR SPANGLED CROCHET COTTON, Article 40
14 balls Aqua Spangle or Color of your Choice
Steel Crochet Hook No. 0
60 Gold sequins, 74 Blue sequins or Colors of your Choice

NOTE(s)

Gauge: 6 s c = 1 inch.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Starting at neck edge ch 295, s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each remaining st of ch, ch 1, turn.

2nd Row - Working in back loop of sts throughout and working in s c, increase 1 s c at beginning and end of row, ch 1, turn. Work should measure 51 inches.

Repeat the 2nd row until there arc 320 sts in row, ch 1, turn.

15th Row - Work even, ch 1, turn.

l6th Row - Decrease 1 s c at beginning and end of row, ch 1, turn. Repeat the last row until 8 sts remain, do not cut thread.

Work a row of s c around entire stole working 1 s c in each row on sides and 1 s c in each s c across top working 3 s c in each corner, cut thread.

Edge of Butterfly Stole

Attach thread at neck edge ch 5 and working down side, around lower edge and up opposite side, work 1 d c in each s c pulling up the d c about 5/8 inch and working 3 d c in each corner, do not work across neck edge (straight side), cut thread.

Next Row - Attach thread in 1st d c of previous row and work 1 s c in each d c, cut thread.

Butterfly for on Butterfly Stole

Large Wing: Ch 4, s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts of ch, ch 1, turn.

2nd Row - Working through both loops of sts for entire butterfly, 2 s c in 1st s c, 1 s c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c, ch 1 to turn all rows.

Next 8 Rows - Increase 1 s c at beginning of each row (13 s c).

Work 4 rows even in s c.

Next 8 Rows - Decrease 1 s c at beginning of each row (to decrease: insert hook in 1st st, pull loop through, insert hook in next st, pull loop through, thread over and pull through all loops at one time).

Next Row - Skip 1st s c, s c in next s c, 1 d c in each of the next 2 s c, s c in next s c, without cutting thread work a row of s c around entire wing, cut thread.

Work another large wing in same manner.

Small Wing: Ch 2, 3 s c in 2nd st from hook, ch 1, turn. Next 6 Rows. Increase 1 s c at beginning of each row (9 s c). Work 3 rows even.

Next 2 Rows - Decrease 1 s c at beginning of each row.

Next Row - Skip 1 s c, s c in next s c, 1 d c in each of the next 4 s c, s c in next s c, without cutting thread work a row of s c around entire wing, cut thread.

Work another small wing in same manner.

Work 5 more butterflies in same manner.

Applique to stole as illustrated using 8 Gold sequins for body of each butterfly having large wings at top and small wings at lower edge.

Feelers - Cut 2 pieces of thread 3 1/2 inches in length for each butterfly. Sew to body of butterfly as illustrated.

Sew a Gold sequin in each end of feelers.

Sew 14 Blue sequins on wings of each butterfly arranging as desired.
