Bleeding Hearts Pan Holder


REQUIRED MATERIALS

J&P Coats or Clark's O. N. T. Mercerized Crochet Cotton, size 20, or a medium-weight bedspread cotton, a number 9 crochet hook and a piece of felt, flannel, or other interlining are needed.

NOTE(s)

White with apple green leaves and border and red hearts makes a very pretty holder, or pink with dark green.

Abbreviations: Ch (chain); sc (single crochet); st (stitch); dc (double crochet); sl st (slip stitch); sk (skip); inc (increase - work 2 sts in one st); dec (decrease - work 2 sts off as one); hdc (half double crochet) - thread over as for a dc, insert hook in st and pull lp through, thread over and pull through all 3 lps on hook at once.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

With white or preferred color, ch 55, sc in second st from hook, sc in each st of ch, ch 3, turn.

Row 2 - Dc in each sc, ch 1, turn.

Row 3 - Sc in each dc, ch 2, turn.

Repeat these 2 rows until 37 rows have been worked, or until piece is square.

Finish

Ch 1, sc in each st all around pan holder, cut and fasten thread. Repeat these directions for a second piece.

Stem for Bleeding Hearts Pan Holder

With green, ch 85, sc in second st from hook, hdc in each of next 2 sts, dc in each of next 32 sts on ch, ch 14, sk 1 st of ch-14, sc in each of next 13 sts to form a side stem, sl st in top of next dc on main stem, dc in each st to fourth from end, then hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next, sl st in last st, fasten off.

Large Leaf for Bleeding Hearts Pan Holder

Join green in first st in end of stem as illustrated, 2 sc in each of first 2 sc, ch 1, turn.

Row 2 - Sc in each sc, ch 1, turn.

Row 3 - Inc 1 sc at beginning and end of row (6 sc), ch 3 to turn all following rows.

Row 4 - Dc in each sc across.

Rows 5 through 8 - 2 dc in first and last dc, dc in each dc between.

Rows 9 through 11 - Dc in each dc.

Rows 12 through 16 - Dec first 2 and last 2 sts (work 2 dcs off as one), dc in each dc between.

Row 17 - Dc in each dc, holding last lp of each st on hook, thread over and pull through all lps on hook at once, ch 3, sl st at base of row, sl st in each st down side of leaf, cross on back of leaf to other side and sl st up this side; fasten thread at tip of leaf and cut.

Small Leaf for Bleeding Hearts Pan Holder

Join green thread in base of stem as for large leaf and repeat row 1.

Row 2 - Sc in each sc, ch 3 (counts as a dc), turn. Always ch 3 to turn.

Row 3 - 2 dc in first and last sc, dc in each sc between (6 dc in all).

Work 3 more rows increasing in each row as in row 2, until there are 12 dcs.

Dec in the next 3 rows by dec in first and last dcs of each row - there will be 4 dcs left.

Dc in each of these 4 dcs, holding last lp of each st on hook, thread over and pull through all lps on hook at once, sl st around as for large leaf.

Sew stem and leaves to pan holder as shown in sketch, curving top of stem and small branch.

Large Heart for Bleeding Hearts Pan Holder

With red, ch 3, sk 1 ch, sc in each of 2 remaining chs, ch 1 to turn all rows.

Row 2 - 2 sc in each sc (4 sc).

Row 3 - 2 sc in first sc, sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in last sc (6 sc).

Repeat this row twice, inc to 10 sc.

Rows 6, 7 - Sc in each sc (10 sc).

Row 8 - (Sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc in each of next 5 sc) twice; cut and fasten thread.

Make 3 more hearts this size. Sew one in each corner.

Medium Size Heart for Bleeding Hearts Pan Holder

Ch 2, sc on ch, ch 1 to turn all rows.

Row 2 - 2 sc in sc.

Row 3 - 2 sc in each sc (4 sc).

Row 4 - 2 sc in first sc, sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in last sc (6 sc).

Repeat row 4 once, making 8 sc.

Row 6 - Sc in each sc.

Row 7 - (Hdc, dc, hdc, sc in each of next 4 sc) twice; cut and fasten thread.

Make 4 more hearts of this size. Place and sew under stem as shown.

Small Heart for Bleeding Hearts Pan Holder

Ch 2, sc on ch, ch 1 to turn all rows.

Row 2 - 2 sc on sc.

Row 3 - 2 sc in each sc (4 sc).

Row 4 - Sc in each sc.

Row 5 - * (Hdc, dc) in first sc, (hdc, sl st) in next sc, repeat from * twice; cut and fasten thread.

Make 4 more hearts of this size.

With white (if holder is colored), green or yellow (if holder is white), make 3 or 4 overcast sts above the center of each medium and small size heart.

Cut interlining slightly smaller than crochet pieces. Place lining between the two crocheted pieces, sew or single crochet around edge.

Scalloped Edge for Bleeding Hearts Pan Holder

Join green in right hand bottom corner.

Row 1 - Sc around entire square with 3 sc in each corner and working in back lp of sts only; join with sl st.

Row 2 - Ch 1, (sc in next sc, 2 dc in each of next 2 sc, sc in next sc) repeated to corner, ch 21, (sc in second st from hook, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, sc in next st) repeated to base of chain (5 scallops), ch 1, and repeat up other side of ch-21 (5 scallops), sl st at base of ch; this makes a scalloped loop hanger; * sc in next sc on pan holder, 2 dc in each of next 2 sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * around last 3 sides of holder, with ch 1 on each corner, join to first scallop, cut and fasten thread.
