Free Crochet Bag Pattern

Crochet a purse that looks like an old canteen - a very unique bag for sure! This crochet pattern was published in the 1940s.
Follow the easy directions below that will walk you through the process of crocheting this unique bag. It can be crocheted in any color.
Free Crochet Pattern for a Bag:
Pattern Number 2711
J. and P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN
6 Balls of Blue Jewel
1 Ball of Spanish Red
Bone Crochet Hook No. 6
1/3 Yard Each of Buckram and Matching Red Felt for Lining
Use 4 threads throughout.
Gauge: 4 sc make 1 inch; 4 1/2 rnds make 1 inch.
Starting at center, with Blue, ch 4. Join.
1st rnd: 10 sc in ring.
2nd rnd: 1 sc in each sc around.
3rd rnd: Sc in each sc around.
4th rnd: 2 st in each sc around (40 sc).
5th and 6th rnds: Sc in each sc around.
7th rnd: * 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * atoond (60 sc).
8th, 9th and 10th rnds: Sc in each sc around.
11th rnd: Same as 7th rnd (90 sc).
12th to 15th rnds incl: Sc in each sc around.
16th rnd: * 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc. Repeat from * around (120 sc).
17th to 21st rnds incl: Sc in each sc around.
At end of 21st rnd, sl st in next sc. Break off.
Work as for Front until 18 rnds are complete.
19th rnd: Ch 7, skip 7 sc, sc in each sc to end of rnd.
20th rnd: Sc in next 7 ch, sc in each sc to end of rnd.
21st rnd: Sc in each sc around. Sl st in next sc. Break off.
Work as for Front until 5 rnds are complete.
6th rnd: Ch 5, skip 5 sc, sc in each sc around.
7th rnd: Sc in next 5 ch, sc in each sc to end of rnd. Sl st in next sc. Break off.
With Red, make a chain 14 inches long. Break off and whip around edge of Change Purse.
Starting at center with Blue, ch 15.
1st row: Sc in 10th ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn.
2nd row: Sc in each sc, sc in next 3 ch, 2 sc in next 3 ch, sc in next 3 ch. Working on opposite side of starting chain, make sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
3rd row: Sc in each sc across to first 2-sc group, 2 sc in next 6 sc, sc in each sc across. Break off.
With Red, make a chain 8 inches long. Break off. Whip around edges of Tongue.
Gusset and Strap
Starting at center with Blue, ch 155.
1st rnd: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, 3 sc in last ch. Working across opposite side of starting chain, make sc in each ch across.
2nd rnd: 2 sc in next 3 sc, sc in each sc to next 3-sc group, 2 sc in next 3 sc, sc in each sc to end of rnd.
3rd rnd: Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next 2 sc, sc in each sc to next 2-sc group at opposite end, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next 2 sc, sc in each sc to end of rnd.
4th rnd: Sc in each sc around. Sl st in next sc. Break off.
Leaving 2 1/2 inches of Gusset piece free, pin Gusset between Front and Back (have buttonhole at center top of Back), leaving 9 1/2 inches free at top. Working through both thicknesses, make sc in each sc around, joining Gusset to Bag. Overlap ends of Strap and sew together.
Line bag with buckram and lining material. Sew Change Purse to center of Front, Jeaving 5 1/2 inches free at top (buttonhole side). Sew straight edge of Tongue in place.
With Red, ch 10.
1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn.
2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
Repeat the 2nd row until piece measures 2 inches. Break off.
Cover a 2 inch piece of pencil with felt and then sew small button piece over this. Ch 15 and sew an end of chain around button. Sew opposite end to Bag 1 inch above Tongue.
With Red, ch 12. Complete as for Small Button. Sew free end of chain to Front opposite buttonhole.
